Excellent experience for our daughter's birthday celebration!

Our daughter's 17th birthday fell during our family vacation in Puerto Vallarta and we chose Umai because she requested sushi and we read the strong reviews. It did not disappoint! Our server, Jesus was amazing, and made her celebration so special - they serenaded her with a birthday song and brought out a special dessert. We ordered a variety of sushi rolls and the "Flame" was an especially cool presentation as Jesus lit the sauce on fire and mixed up the flames right at our table. this was accompanied by dimming the lights and special music. So fun! Highly recommend!

I loved the dishes and the atmosphere, delicious temperas, exquisite tuna poke and the jalapeno rolls and they have a strong dish, lobster sambal umai. The waiter recommended it to me and I loved it. The host was very friendly and the chef came out to ask us about the dishes. The waiters were very attentive and helpful, they took care of us at all times.

We were attended by Carmelita, her service and attention was EXCELLENT, very friendly, she offered suggestions and all the questions we asked her resolved them and not only she, all the restaurant staff, was very friendly, from the entrance, and everyone who attended us, made us feel very comfortable. The food is delicious and by Carmelita they even made us a special drink that is not on the menu: Calpico with lychees DELICIOUS!!! 😋

Took my girlfriend out to eat for birthday here. Where do I start…Drinks were not good we ordered margaritas. Both ordered the steak however the cook came out with one steak and a lobster tail. Told him we both ordered steak before he cooked it. Said okay, still proceeded to cook the tail, had to notify him once again that was not what we ordered. The food here was 6/10 at best. The service was 2/10. We finally got out tab and the lobster tail was on there again attempting to charge us for it after I’ve told them at this point twice that we only ordered steak. Do not recommend this place. Over priced, small portions and trash service.

It is the first time that I visit this beautiful Restaurant, which I did with my sisters and brother to celebrate our mother. The place is very nice and clean. The food and drinks are excellent but what I recommend most is the good service of the waiters, especially the one who served us with such great patience and above all with a smile, always guided us with our questions and was always attentive to any of our requests. . Amazing teppanyaki in Puerto Vallarta!

Having gone to several teppanyaki places this is without a doubt one of the best. Benihana has set the gold standard and UMAI has surpassed it. The food is a bit more upscale and everything was delicious. From the salmon amuse busche to the cook of the beef, that practically melted in your mouth. Everything was extremely high quality. The service was also impeccable with kinds and courteous staff that made our time there unforgettable. The final touch of a complimentary dessert with the words "congratulations" b written in chocolate for the engaged couple was truly the cherry on top.

We enjoyed two dinners in this lovely, gracious Japanese/Asian restaurant. Ginger, wasabi, and a yummy amuse bouche appear immediately. The extensive menu has something for everyone—from sushi and sashimi, salads, and main dish specialties to a teppanyaki grill dinner. On our first visit, we had only main course dishes. Sambal Salmon and Spicy Mero (grouper) were both delicious. On our second visit, we had a three-course dinner (and took food home). Salmon tostadas—finely chopped marinated salmon on crispy tortillas—were outstanding. The seafood stuffed raviolis were also excellent. Both these appetizers came three to an order. Our delicious main courses were Tuna Yakisoba (tuna bites in a sweet sauce with noodles) and a baked salmon and scallops dish. Desserts were fried ice cream and a brownie. Attention to detail is obvious: every item is artfully plated. Located in the Buganvilias Resort next to the Sheraton, Umai is convenient for hotel and resort guests but is also worth coming to from other locations, and food can be ordered for delivery. Although this is a modern, elegant restaurant, we saw many guests in casual (shorts) attire. Service from Carmen, Jesus, and other staff members was outstanding.

Not a delectable experience for my mouth or my wallet

Friendly staff. The place is smaller then it looks online. We started with a seaweed salad. It tasted as if it was frozen and recently thawed. It wasn’t BAD but seaweed salad shouldn’t have you questioning it’s legitimacy. It should taste exactly as expected. Paid $23 usd ($390 pesos) for a 3 piece Prime Rib Gyzo that came out dry and dehydrated looking on a bed of vegetables that looked like they came out the story fry bag (you know those tiny broccolis?). The wooden bowl it came out on wasn’t steaming or hot. Just utilized as a plate. I didn’t realize how much I was paying. Blame it on my mental peso to usd calculator. But it tasted underwhelming. Me and my girlfriend decided to split a speciality roll. A spicy tuna roll. $210 pesos. It may honestly be the most underwhelming roll of sushi I have ever eaten. The rice didn’t even look like sushi rice. My first piece fell apart on the chopstick. Not in a sticky way but crumbly. It looked like a basic roll with a thin slice of avocado and a thin shave of a jalapeño. I’m not a sushi snob but I eat sushi quite often at local sushi places in the states and they’re pretty no frills no fuss. I expected this place to be at least on par with them but not even close We usually order one roll to assess the situation and order more as we see fit. We decided against ordering another I’m so happy we split a roll rather then ordering 2 at the same time. So we paid $76 for one roll, seaweed salad, mineral water and 3 pot stickers. Just a very forgetful experience and we expected more from a place by the sea with nice signage in front of the building. I’ll honestly pass on sushi here in Mexico because of this experience.

We went to Sunday brunch and we really liked it! Mr. Eswin approached us to offer us dinner at the Japanese restaurant Umai and he recommended some drinks that were really delicious with sake, he recommended some dishes including the teppanyaki table, Jorge served us, very helpful and very attentive to my family I highly recommend the place, we didn't know it and we are from here in Vallarta! Try the very good ramen 👌 we will be back!

The food is delicious, I went specifically for the ramen which is delicious and very balanced, but my family ordered other dishes and I loved them, everything tastes very fresh and the attention of those who served me, Jesús and Jorge, was excellent! I can not recommend Umai enough. Having a 7 month old baby can make dining out tough sometimes, but our waitress Carmen, and the rest of the staff, was extremely accommodating and made it a great experience. The food was high quality and delicious, and at an extremely fair price point. If you’re staying at the Sheraton it’s an absolute must, but it’s worth a drive even if you’re not!

The best Sushi, Environment, and Staff

Quite possibly the best sushi I’ve ever had. The Sushero, Miguel, really knew his flavor profiles and presented several dishes with incredibly rich and fresh flavors. All of the staff including Jésus were very friendly and accommodating. Two of the people at our table were vegans and the chefs accommodated them wonderfully. Prices were surprisingly decent for the food being served. The bottled water seemed a bit expensive. I will definitely come to this restaurant regularly! Posiblemente el mejor sushi que he probado. El Sushero, Miguel, realmente conocía sus perfiles de sabor y presentó varios platos con sabores increíblemente ricos y frescos. Todo el personal, incluido Jesús, fue muy amable y servicial. Dos de las personas en nuestra mesa eran veganos y los chefs los atendieron maravillosamente. Los precios eran sorprendentemente decentes para la comida que se servía. Very delicious and best service

We went to eat at Umai to get out of the resort and get some good food. The staff was very friendly, specially drinks were amazing, food was delicious. Sushi choices were delicious and flaming roll was a spectacular display! Our hiboshi cook was amazing, very funny, and nice! The bill came in a chest with small shots and smoked ambiance when opened. We had 2 sushi rolls, 2 kid items (banana roll on kid menu was delicious!), 2 speciality drinks (Umai, and promo emperor, both beautiful and tasty!), a beer, 2 lemonade, and 2 hiboshi meals (came with salad, and a soup, display was fancy and best I have tasted with top quality ingredients) and it was just under $150 USD. I servers poured all our drinks, beer and water, top notch serves. Then we had a birthday and the serenade was beautiful and not cheesy at all. The birthday dessert was beautiful and tasty. I would go back anytime to get quality service and wonderful food. It made the whole trip! Would definitely recommend!

Let me start with the good. Once we found the restaurant, first impressions were favourable. The decor is pleasing and we were met at the door and promptly escorted to our table. The service was also attentive throughout the meal and the food was attractively presented and of reasonable quantity. Now on to the, "needs improving". I ordered tea. I was brought a small cup, half full of hot water, with a tea bag in it and the string and tag dangling outside the cup. Japanese tea is about as traditional a dish as you can get. Always served in a pot. Number one miss. After placing our orde, that included soup, the waiter arrived with ONE complimentary bowl of miso and placed it in front of my husband??? A number two miss on many levels. And then there was the food, with the soup being served last. Is that a new tradition. I will err on their side and give it a pass. The rice in the rolls is just off. Possibly not the right kind of rice and certainly not properly seasoned. The masago was suspiciously creamy as was the salmon? The ramen soup had an oil that didn't agree with me (usually vegetable oils). When asked what oil was in the soup, the waiter informed me the chef said, sesame oil. First, I have no issues with sesame oil and second, sesame oil has a very distinct taste. This was not sesame oil. So I will generously lump all food into one category and give it a number three miss. With a little tinkering this could be a good restaurant.

A MUST visit in Puerto Vallarta

The sushi was sublime. Flavor EXPLODED on the pallet. This was our second trip here. Visited two nights previous. Atmosphere was extremely inviting and the ONLY aspect of this experience that equaled the food was the service. Our waiters AND the hostess recognized us from the previous evening and made us feel exceptionally welcome and special. Simply put, this restaurant ranks in our top of all our dining experiences which includes a majority of Europe and a sizable number of American and Mexican establishments.
