A place of tradition in Veracruz. I enjoyed coffee and pastries. Great for breakfast and even when I didn't have lunch I noticed that they serve meals at a very fair price on a daily basis. Once I tried pastel de tres leches and it was awsome! So moist and fresh with a delicious taste. A little bit slow service... More

The place serves very good coffee. I'm not a latte fan so for me the Cafe Americano and a pastry is really good here in my opinion. And the location, service and atmosphere excellent. I would definitely pass on the food though as it is what you would expect for a Zocala facing location. Nostalgic at best. But for a... More

Such a wonderful cafe, just in front of the Catedral and besides the Zocalo. The lecheros (coffee with milk) are delicious (33 pesos for a small one, 35 pesos for a large). We had the "huevos revueltos con chorizo" (86 pesos) - a large plate with a delicious and generous portion of scrambled eggs with savory chorizo, a side of... More

Beautiful old cafe in the heart of town. Ordering coffee and watching the hot milk pored table side is pretty spectacular and getting a refill by tapping your spoon on the side of the cup is an experience!

Its original name was exactly as today's name, but for many years it changed to "Gran café de la Parroquia"; a family dispute created a division and on this location the name was turned back to Gran Cafe del Portal. It opened its doors first in 1824 so it is a landmark and a tradition in Veracruz like no other.... More

Being open for over 90 years they clearly know how to run a restaurant. Their menu says they are open 24 hours a day, but their facebook page says 7am to 11pm... not sure which is correct. We loved the food, the fabulous space, and the staff were friendly and attentive. We finished our meal with their Lechero coffee beverage.... More

The coffee is good and better then at the Cafe la Parroquia. Also the food and the atmosphere are better. We were there for breakfast, and the pancakes were good.

The place is old, which is part of the characterisctics for a place with history. Service is slow and prices does not correspond to an average food quality

One of the old, classic Veracruz cafes. Just off the zocalo, next to Gran Hotel Diligencias. High ceilings, fans, patrons with guyaberas and straw fedoras. menus offered in english and spanish - get the spanish one - the english one is a little puzzling. they do all the classics well and service is professional and excellent. even their presentation of Sopa de Tortilla is good - bowl of soup with side plate of tiny tortilla strips, chunks of queso fresco, chunks of avocado and slices of guajillo chile - rather than the usual bowl with tortilla strips already in and getting soggy. Ate there mid afternoon and an oasis of quiet and cool in the center of Veracruz.
