Fifteen years ago when my wife and I were still dating, the original GUU was our favorite Japanese restaurant in Vancouver. Each time we were in Vancouver downtown, we waited outside its door at 5:30PM to get a spot by the sushi bar, watching chef’s work while eating delicious food. We visited Vancouver less after we got kid, and stayed... More

This is entertainment as well as a great place to eat. The energy is contagious and the food is yummy although it may take a a couple of tries to discover what you like from the not very typical japanese bistro type menu. Be prepared to wait for awhile for a table if you go during regular dinner hour (6-8).... More

They welcome you with a resounding shout of "Irashai"! It's fun! Very tight fitting. Service is wonderful. We sat at the sushi bar to watch all the cooking. My favorite was the yaki udon. Udon noodles pan fried in a wok instead of in soup. Very tasty!

I went here for lunch and it wasn't too busy so I got a table after about a five minute wait. I had the bbq'd mackerel and it was very good, but next time I think I'll get some kind of noodle bowl. Guu is tasty but very loud and exciting for a small place, good place to grab a... More

Delicious and authentic meal! The meal begins with an oshibori, or hot towl, and food and drink are ordered as desired and brought to the table as ordered. The menu at Guu changes daily, but I can say that everything we had was delicious! Fun experience and plan to return next time I visit Vancouver!

We send many visitors to Guu on Thurlow. They are exceptional with their craft. The food is high quality and authentic. Someone that loves sushi or is a foodie will love it. Not a place for a vegetarian but there is a couple options and a good list of beer too. It's often a busy place and worth the line-up,... More

We sat down, ordered lunch and watched everyone get served except us. Our lunch was never actually put in the system and waited close to 45 minutes for nothing. No one ever followed up. I will never go back.

Great place to come by after work, have a few pints with the lads and munch on some simply fantastic dishes. Their pork belly just melts in your mouth. Lots of choices to choose from, so you'll have to come multiple times to try it all!

I checked this resto out based on a Google search. All I can say I will be back when I rtn to YVR. I love izakayas for their small plates and offerings of Japanese food (that don't include sushi). Service is attentive and friendly. And the servers and cooks are always shouting a welcome or thank you so don't be... More

Stop reading this. Just go!! Yes, there's a bit of a wait at times but grab a menu while you wait so you are ready to roll when you get seated. Best seats are in front of the kitchen. Go

Staying in West End

Neighbourhood Profile
West End
A hodgepodge of landscapes, the West End combines verdant gardens and blocky modern architecture, with Victorian bits and Edwardian bobs in between. It is a paradise for takeout food, take-away coffee, and perhaps incongruously, some of Vancouver's most languid lines of beachfront. English Bay and Sunset Beach invite swimmers, strollers, and picnic-lovers to take in dusk settling over the water, or to jog along with the sunrise, offering breathtaking views at any time of day. The West End merges together so many looks and flavors probably because it functions a hub: its the leafy pit-stop between nightlife and entertainment venues along Davie Street, and the shopping paradise that is Robson Street, offering visitors beautiful parkland to rest on, and quick, easy food to re-fuel with in between ventures.
