We ended up at Bocata by happy accident. We had intended to go to Barocco next door, and almost left after we realized our mistake, but our server explained that Barocco is 18+ only. Our server was very attentive. My husband enjoyed the lobster tagliatelle,...I had the endive mussels with dill, one daughter enjoyed the mushroom cavatappi and one had the catch of the day with mashed potatoes with leeks. All the dishes were well prepared. Our server offered a side by side port tasting to help us decide on an after dinner drink. The half-baked biscuit with ice cream was a delicious finale.More

We had a pleasant dinner at Bocata. The menu was varied and the prices were high. The wine was reasonable value. The clientele was attractive. The décor was pleasant. The wait staff were professional and charming. It is located in Old Montreal

We made reservations at this restaurant because the atmosphere looked very inviting. Arrived and ordered wine. There are two sizes of wine by the glass. 2.5 oz or 5 oz. Hmmm. Those are smaller portions than usual. At $7 and $14 seems a little pricey....We asked the waitress what kind of cab it was. The answer was Napa Valley. Not which vineyard. But ordered a couple of glasses anyway. It was ok, but tasted a little chalky. The waitress, by the way, was very friendly and efficient. The menu was where we really struggled. No soup. No salad. One beef dish. No chicken, pork, or any other meat. Mostly seafood. I don’t even remember there being a fish. After asking about a salad the waitress said that the chef could make one for me. The scallop appetizer looked interesting. When I asked for a description, she said there were two scallops. For $22. There was nothing on the menu that my husband found interesting. We kept watching to see what plates of food looked like as they would be served to other tables. But despite the fact that the restaurant was fairly full, and we were there for about 40 minutes, we never saw any food come out. We decided to finish our wine and eat somewhere else. Maybe the food is really good. We never found out.More

Hi Julie, Thank you for your review. We’re glad the service you received was friendly and efficient! Though we are sympathetic and regret that you did not stay for dinner, our staff did try their very best to accommodate you in regards to the menu...More

This is the kind of resto that makes Montreal such a great foodie city. It's small, tucked away in a nondescript building on St-Paul, and has the usual overly protective hostess that refuses to speak English - good thing this resto isn't in an area...popular with tourists. From out of town. That don't speak French. Enough said. Luckily the server was more open to Shakespeare's chosen tongue and got our entire party through the dinner. I'm a perfectly bilingual Montrealer, but my guests? No, so as tourists in my fair city, I would expect restos that depend on tourists to at least make an effort. Service was attentive and informed, the room is small and cozy, and the menu is broad with a little something for everybody. The menu leans seafood, but there was enough for our Vegan guest and Vegetarian guest to make a good meal of it. We ordered many many of the appetizer portions as if we were eating tapas, and they were all great - the sea smelts and the oyster platter in particular were tasty. We also ordered a few of the entrees, the risotto (very standard), the ricotta cavatelli (reliable and tasty) and the Lobster Taglietelle (good but heavy, best to be shared). We also took up the server suggestions for local wine and spirits and were not disappointed. The dessert of Bombolino and Tres Leches were so-so, clearly not the strong point of the entire evening, but still enjoyable. Overall nice dinner spot, nice room, reliable food, they just need to be a bit more open to non-French speaking patrons.More

Decent wine selection and good seafood. Small place. Only reason why I gave it 4 stars is because service was a little off.

Out of the many restaurants that we have tried on our annual “retreat” weekends, this is definitely one of the best experiences (and we have had many great experiences). The ambience is great, homey and quaint and charming. The service was excellent with knowledgeable and...personable wait staff. We chose to share multiple small plates (snacks and entrees) instead of the plats principals so that we could try a maximum of flavours and textures (and save some room for dessert). We started with oysters. The house maple, apple, and jalapeño sauce was interesting, with a warm sweet flavour that left behind a pleasantly stimulating afterburn. The highly recommended Pata Negra de Belotta did not disappoint, and was one of the absolute best appetizers I have ever tasted - thinly sliced ham with powerful garlic and bright tomatoes - amazing! The delicate foie gras with the bold spicy manchego was a perfect pairing. The tartare de canard was new to me - I love tartare, but duck takes it to a whole new level of tender succulence. The burrata du moment was truly melt-in-your-mouth, paired again with tasty foccacia. We also tried the ceviche special which was delicious and much more gentle and subtle than many versions despite the spice. We also shared three desserts around the table - my favourite was the pavlova, mainly because of the tart, refreshing apple sorbet and crisp sour apples on top. My sisters both favoured the half-baked cookie, adorned with rich caramel and a scoop of bourbon ice cream. Bocata has the perfect combination of fun vibe and inventive cuisine (and a respectable wine list to boot) - definitely worth making this a recurring part of our annual tradition in the future!More

We were looking for a place to relax, have some wine and maybe something to much on. This was a good choice. Owned by the same people who run a fancier, more expensive restaurant next door, this was a good place to sit, relax, enjoy...a variety of wines and small plates. Gave us a great respite and cured the hunger pangs until dinner! Ambience is quiet and dark; if the weather is nice, the noise from outside can intrude a bit if you're sitting by the windows.More

Montreal has no shortages of amazing restaurants but Bocata was amazing. Great tapas with a French-Canadian twist. We were starving and ordered almost half of the menu....nothing disappointed. It was all amazing. They even made the kids an off the menu cacio e pepe pasta...that was the best I have ever had. But the server was just way way too full of himself and it took away from the experience. They were not busy and when we walked in, we came with a couple of our friends that weren’t on our reservation but had reservations nearby...when the waiter came by to pour water he started pouring a glass and stopped mid way through the 2nd glass, said “I don’t know what’s going on here” and just walked away. That attitude stayed the whole night. It didn’t take away from the excellence of the food but definitely took away from the whole experience.More

Nice cosy place, with the table packed on each other as you’ll only see in Paris. Nice cocktails menu presentation on a bottle. Not so many choices on the menu. But went for the Rib Eye. Amazingly good. Unfortunately my place was very dark, so...could only read the menu, or eating my food with the light of my phone. But waitress came half way with a candle light. Patatas bravas i have taken were not the real ones. I can say so, cause i am living with a Catalan beauty. GT was a local gin from Montreal, had a small taster first. Really nice but please do something on presentation of your GT’s.More

The Bocata was filled with surprises. The atmosphere is rustic casual . We had a night filled with laughter and great food. Two of us had the lobster rolls they were light with great taste. The tuna tartar was fantastic with peanuts and cilantro. The...tuna special was sheer perfection served with broccoli and cauliflower. Bravo,we will return.More

I intended to visit Barracco, next door, but as I walked by Bocata, the menu caught my eye as did a perfectly cozy seat for one at the end of the bar. They were happy to indulge me and I was magically met by the...restaurant's owner, Mitch, behind the bar. He was very amiable and superbly knowledgable - takes great pride in his restaurant and staff. He set me up with a delicious glass of red wine and suggested the Tuna tartare accompany. The flavor combination was unlike any I have previously experienced. I just had to try a few bites of the Ricotta Cavatelli - several members of the staff stopped by to say how much they liked it and that they were excited for me to enjoy it. The kitchen KNOWS what's good. And they did NOT disappoint. My only regret is I didn't come hungrier. Bocata's atmosphere is cozy and their food is delicious. A wonderful date night, meal with friends, or - like myself - a treat for one. Ask for Mitch and Victoria.More
