Great little restaurant featuring South Indian food. Friendly atmosphere, clean, and not too noisy. Don't forget to sample the idly and dosa.

Lovely to find this quality of indian food in Montréal! Great selection of dosas, south Mumbai dahl is awesome. The service is very nice. I am delighted, I go to India every year for work, it’s great to find good indian food right here.

I'm not kidding, during a 2 week period I ate here 4 times! If you glance around the tables, you wouldn't be mistaken thinking you are actually IN India because most of the clients are from the sub continent. That gives you a clue as...More

This is the place to try a dosa or the South India cuisine. This a a great place for someone who is looking for a cheap eat, but packed with flavour and texture. Really different than most indian/pakistany restaurants in Montreal.

They have a great selection of South Indian food. Not very authentic, but does the trick. The service on weekends is a mess and could be improved. Do not miss the ghee roast, curd vada and masala vada. Easily the best items in their menu.

Be prepared that this is a very noisy resto, and that the IGA very close by does NOT have good offerings in their cooler (at least not on a Saturday eve). I have family from South India, and have visited Southern India 2x. Normally I...More

Good place for south Indian vegetarian dishes especially dosas. Bad non-vegetarian dishes. Chilly chicken has more that chicken in chilly gravy you know.

Authentic South Indian cuisine is nowhere near as popular as North Indian food in Montreal simply because of shortage, but Kumaresan Muthukrishnan and his wife Geetha are determined to shed some light on the staples as they grew up eating with their restaurant. Dosas, idlis, bondas, uttapams … while these words appeal to South Indians longing for a taste of home, they also arouse the curiosity of Montreal restaurant goers looking to discover new facets of Indian cuisine. Thanjai, Montreal’s first authentic South Indian restaurant, fulfills both these desires. It is comfortingly familiar to the Desi community who have made it their second home. Furthermore, it is the first to expose Montreal foodies to Indian gastronomy beyond the more ubiquitous cuisine of the North. Hailing from the states of Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh, Thanjai’s dishes offer Montrealers the opportunity to sample the healthy, vibrant flavours of South India. Favouring the use of different spices over excessive oil, South Indian cuisine satisfies taste buds while minding waistlines! Today a resounding success, Thanjai has a come a long way from its humble beginnings as a 10-seat counter on Victoria Avenue. Since 2012, its more spacious location on Van Horne Avenue has introduced even more people to such delicacies as the tangy Chicken 65, the crispy Masala Dosa, the fluffy idli and the fragrant Hyderabadi-style biryani. It is also the one and only restaurant in North America to offer a 6-foot dosa – and it can be ordered anytime! With enough seats to accommodate 70 and an 80-100 capacity private hall, Thanjai invites you to partake in this sumptuous South Indian feast! Our Features: Bring your own wine and beer (BYOW) - Catering - Coupons & Deals - Groups Welcome - Kids Friendly - Private Functions - Reception Services - Reservations Recommended - Take-Out Food - Wireless Internet (WiFi).
