Great service, interesting menu and a very cool location. The inside of the restaurant is very nice. A fun place to go on a date or with friends.

Enjoy the VERY relaxed atmosphere here--the staff SPEAKS to you because they care. Our "lost reservation" turned into a seat at the bar with a view of the kitchen and attention from the bartender. It`s loud but coming from a small town, I LIKE loud and cheerful. Food is great and with the exchange it is most reasonable. We come here about 3... More

Everything about this Old Montreal restaurant was wonderful. Terrific décor and ambiance feels like a neighborhood restaurant. Service was outstanding. Friendly, attentive a knowledgeable. All staff spoke very good English and we're welcoming of people obviously from out of town. The menu, written in French and English on blackboards, had many delicious choices. Everyone at my table was very pleased... More

One of the best places I've eaten in a long time!! Started with a Romeo Gin Martini -- so good -- flavors of Juniper/Cucumber/Lavender!! Started with Shrimp and Oysters -- entree was the best!! I had seafood bouillabaisse -- other entrees in group just as good!! Dessert of apple Pastry with Maple ice-cream very yummy!! Ended with delicious authentic cappuccino!... More

To start, we are a 32 year old couple with no kids, from Ottawa, ON. Visiting this restaurant was a dream of mine as I've been a fan of chef Chuck Hughes for many many years; he's one of the best Canadian chefs we have! Unfortunately we can't say we'd return to Le Garde Manger as the food was sub-par.... More

There isn't a sign outside so just make sure you have the address in hand. the restaurant is on Saint-Francois Xavier at the corner of Saint-Paul Ouest (West). Also, I don't think the online reservation system works (we telephoned to get a reservation). Our food was outstanding. We shared an Endive salad, both loved it. Hubby had the hanger steak... More

Love the atmosphere...we sat in the small room in the back and the large wooden, rustic bar, would absolutely sit there again! We were lucky to be able to watch one of the chefs prepare amazing seafood platters behind the bar. Our food was amazing. Jerk crap in the shell...ooo very spicy! Scallops which of course were done perfectly. The... More

This restaurant was recommended by the staff of the boutique hotel that we stayed at in Old Montreal. I don't even think there was a sign outside. Truly, a hidden gem. We could only get reservations at the Bar, but that was perfect. There were 2 bars, and we were in the back which was quieter and only had 6... More

Given the fame of Chuck Hughes, I figured this restaurant of his was going to be all show and not much depth. And, considering how difficult it is to get a reservation, I also figured there was more "hype" than anything else. But my husband and I had a gift certificate that we had been procrastinating using for close to... More

Staying in Vieux-Montreal (Old Montreal)

Neighbourhood Profile
Vieux-Montreal (Old Montreal)
The historic centre of Montreal, Vieux-Port is home to some of the city's most antiquated buildings and picturesque streets. Along the waters of the St. Lawrence River, the bank of Old Port features museums, festivals, food stalls, and outdoor athletics, a celebrated part of the city that explodes into fireworks displays on warm summer nights. At its centre, street performers and artists compete with sprawling restaurant terraces for space along Jacques-Cartier Square, while the cobbled streets of Rue St. Paul and Rue Notre-Dame offer a reprieve of quiet galleries and atmospheric wine bars. Horse-drawn carriages are not an uncommon part of traffic, and the narrows they traverse are lined with boutiques, crêperies, and poutine shops enshrined in buildings of stone and wooden lattices. Here you can evoke Montreal's past with a traditional cooking lesson or historical tour, then enjoy its artistic present with live music and theatre.
