famous but dispointing. the fish is overcooked, bean curb is cold when served, pork knucle is only warm and dry.

Mini business trip series... Many many years ago (actually I wanted to use once upon a time but that'd sound a bit kua cheong) I made a quick stop at this restaurant after spending some time at the Hotspring in Sungkai. Based on what I've...learned, they have a few dishes that I should try and tried them I did. Then I didnt have the opportunity to revisit until recently. It was shortly before noon when I had to drive from KL to Penang on business trip. I knew that the timing was perfect to stop by for lunch again hence I made a quick detour. The sight of the restaurant excited me. Nothing much had changed.. except for the MCO SOP and stuff like that. ◾ Pork knuckle - it was gigantic despite the hand design by the lady boss when I asked about the size. Standard she said.. and it was too big. Anyhow the sauce had a nice touch of herbals without being too thick (but too thin to my liking),while the meat was done just right without the piggy smell. I guess everyone has their own style of making this dish. ◾ikan terubok - my main purpose of coming to this restaurant and rightly so.. you can literally eat the meat and the bones together. The sauce had a touch of herbs with spiciness from the dried chilly. But when you squeezed the kalamansi onto the fish and the sauce, it changed the whole dish completely. I found myself like a young boy again. ◾chai boey... Or sour & spicy vegetable. One of the better version that I'd tried. After so many years, I came, I saw, and I conquered again... This is one of the oldest chinese seafood in Sungkai. They move to this location years back. Charge higher compared to old shop but still reasonable & worth a try

I used to stop at this restaurant many times for the famous pork knuckle. For this trip which is different because I have been long waiting after booking the flat head river cat fish ”白尾“ 。 The restaurant owner manage to get a 4.6kg one....It was delicious, unforgettable trip.More

This restaurant has lived up to its reputation for good food and value. The pig trotters is my favourite, well flavoured and a delight to clean the bones as the finishing touch to a satisfying meal. Each serving is a standard size, costing RM45. Portion...is enough for 3 or 4 persons. If only 2 are eating, just 1 dish of trotters is enough. There are greens in the gravy so it actually works - the 1 dish for 2 strategy. While the food is excellent, the customer service staff are really below par. They are non-attentive and from my eyes, it seems they are trying to avoid eye contact so as to do less work. However, once they have been summoned, they come forward and serve without any fuss. Despite this setback, I will continue to patronise Choy Kee.More

Stuck in holiday traffic on the NSE from PJ to Ipoh, we had to cancel our plans for lunch in Gopeng as, 2.5 hours after leaving PJ, we had only got as far as Sungkai. So, we got off the highway at Sungkai, and chanced...upon this place. Unique was their assam terubuk. This extremely bony fish had been cooked so the bones were soft, and it tasted like sardine. Unfortunately, the assam broth was too spicy, so my kids couldn't have any. A minus is the drinks came prepacked in single-use plastic. Other than that, food was ok, pricing was ok. Better than a highway rest stop!More

Sungkai is a small place with a quick detour from the North South Highway. Coming back from Kuala Lumpur to Penang, we make a quick detour to this restaurant. We ordered steamed fish and 3 veggie dishes. Excellent food. Fresh, tasty and reasonable price. The...restaurant does not have rest time and it opens even 2-6pm. Hence it is an excellent place to have lunch or early dinner if you are on the highway. Do not expect excellent or fancy restaurant settings. Just a typical shop-lot restaurant, with fresh and great food to fill up before continue with your journey.More

The food was decent, environment was a normal Chinese restaurant standard and service was OK but we were shocked by the RM375 bill for 5 of us. We ordered steam fish, large prawns and 2 vegetables. Definitely will not go there again.

Whenever I am driving back from KLIA airport back to Ipoh, this is a usual stop for a good hot meal. They are famous for seafood (steamed fish) nd also braised pork. Not a fancy place but friendly service and good food. Quite reasonably priced...too. Give it a try. It is less than 5 minutes drive after you exit the North-South Highway.More
