While out on a circular walk taking in Ashbourne, Dovedale and the Tissington Trail we called in the Old Dog for lunch. The atmosphere was good, the food better and the beer brilliant. Why can't more pubs be like this, dog friendly, with welcoming staff who can't do enough for their customers. Dylan was overjoyed with his bowl of water... More

Beautiful, beautiful gastro pub dining with great ambience and dog friendly. Very honest people who said they had overcharged by accident. The staff are also very friendly. Highly recommended.

Walking in with a dog from a snowy outside, it is difficult not to smile and feel very much at home. Dogs, walkers, stone floor, candles, fire - and that's before you reach the bar. Once we had appropriate drinks (including bowl of water and treat for the dog), we worked our way through the menu - which is not... More

What a gem! Popped in here today whilst out walking in the area with our dogs, we spent a couple of hours tucked away in the corner next to a fire. We had lunch here and a few drinks. Although not the cheapest of menu the quality was good and the portion size generous so no grumble from us. Staff... More

This pub was recommended to us by one of the locals that we talked to while walking on the Tissington Trail. To be honest we were not sure what to expect because we were told that it was a "village run pub" so thought it might just be a bit of a tap room. We were very pleasantly surprised when... More

Great pub with wood burners (although one did really stink of paraffin). Liked the dimly lit atmosphere, however, if you have any sight impairment it would be way too dark - nearly fell over a black dog that couldn't be seen! Food was good but it is a very limited menu - probably because a more comprehensive one would be... More

We loved this pub, its got such a lovely style to it - candles on each table, wood burning stove, rugs on the chairs. We had a burger and ploughmans for lunch which was delicious, I could have stayed in there all afternoon. We will certainly be going back as soon as we can :-) Perfect!

Candlelight, coal burning fire, really really cosy, the staff are really friendly and very dog friendly, the only slight downside is the menu is limited, but what they do, they do very well. Bar snacks are fantastic, nuts cakes etc, and they do great hot chocolate coffee and tea! The beers are great, good choice of well kept ales and... More

We'd never heard of this pub. We came across it after a Tissington Trail stroll. I'm so glad we did, it's a lovely place. The decor's interesting, all quirky candles and lamps and large stoves to get warm by. Every table had a different candle holder and the window seats had furs to sit on, all of which made us... This establishment was warm, cosy and the interiors modern and clean. Lighting was I think purposely old fashioned, with candles setting the atmosphere so it did take us a while for us to adjust, with us arriving in the day time. I am not sure if the menus are changing... we visited on a Sunday afternoon and although restricted with... More
