Exceptional food, really interesting, authentic cuisine. A small and cosy atmosphere, not at all pretentious, friendly and professional service. Very reasonably priced and we left feeling absolutely stuffed! Highly recommend.

We first tried to book a meal at the Old Vienna when we visited Torquay in January 2022 - but stupidly left it til just before we visited! For our visit for 2023 I planned ahead and booked by email 3 weeks before. From the...moment you arrive, to the moment you leave you experience the kind of customer service that has disappeared these days. The front of house staff are superb. A warm welcome is given, and the ladies provide first class service - you truly are not aware of their presence, but they just seem to appear when you need them - for persons of a certain age, think Radar O'Reilly in MASH - and they provide great advice if you have any queries regarding the menu. This is a small restaurant - but you feel equally able to have a private conversation as well as chatting with fellow diners. Werner is an excellent chef. We dined on Wiener Schnitzel and Goulasch on our first visit. Drank Weissbier and a fantastic New Zealand Cabernet Sauvignon. At the end of the meal, Werner comes out to share a schnapps with you. Our meal was on a Friday - at the end we asked if there was any chance of dining on the Saturday - expecting to have no chance. But no, he squeezed us in at 20.30, So, a two night Torquay break turned into a two night epicurean delight. I had Chicken Balantine, while SWMBO had the most amazing roast lamb. We ended up chatting with the diners next to us, plus Werner, drinking schnapps and having the most amazing time. On the way home the Taxi driver told js that every single fare he takes from that restaurant always said what a fantastic meal and time they had. This is truly one of the very best restaurants I have eaten in.More

From chatting to Werner on the phone and booking our table through arriving, dining and leaving, a truly personal and mouth watering experience. We were the first to arrive on Saturday evening (7th Jan 23) from entering the restaurant, the welcome from the two ladies...front of house was so inviting and friendly and remained so until we left a couple of hours later. The restaurant seats around 20 and from 7pm was full, the layout of the seating and tables is such that you can have a personal, intimate night out or converse with those around you. Next, the food.....wow! We were surprised at the number of dishes available, including specials and took a while to make our choices, nothing was overly priced. The wine list is varied and very reasonably priced. The starter and main that we both chose were simply exquisite, local produce expertly cooked to perfection with the most amazing flavours and textures. I started with the Ham hock with Apricots, Rabbit, wild Duck and Pheasant Terrine- Pickled Vegetable and Grainy Mustard and Apple Chutney....delicious. My partner started with the Seared Scallops with Grilled Asparagus Tips, Vine Tomatoes and Saffron Infused Fish Sauce & Dill Oil....delicious. My main was from the Specials menu and was a pork tenderloin dish that I can't remember all of the ingredient parts but was absolutely bang on both in textures and flavours. My partner chose the Pan fried fillets of Sea Bass with crushed potatoes and samphire, cucumber and Noilly prat cream sauce, pickled cucumber pearls & mussels.... again perfect textures and flavours. The Dauphinoise potato and medley of vegetables were delicious and cooked to perfection. We have nothing to do with Werner and his restaurant, just a retired Engineer from The Lake District and an HR Administrator from Torquay but enjoy great food and dining out, I very rarely write a review unless our experience was exceptional. Thank you Werner and your team, both in the kitchen and front of house for a truly memorable dining experience. We'll be back.More

Interesting and varied menu, all locally sourced, cooked to order by a yodelling Austrian with a great sense of humour. What’s not to like! Werner, the owner and chef, talks to all the customers and shares a schnapps at the end of the meal. Brilliant...evening.More

Lovely restaurant, quality food with professional and friendly service. I had homemade sausages with sauerkraut as a starter, followed by duck main and both were excellent - washed down with a nice glass of red.

Fantastic meal, lovely wine, great staff, free schnapps, and all topped off when Werner came in from the kitchen to greet everyone (the spontaneous round of applause from everyone was well deserved). So pleased I emailed Werner to book the Old Vienna Restaurant for the...final night of our holiday in Devon and Cornwall. Cosy setting with seating for approximately 20 people leading to diners talking to each other - this created a really special experience. If you are in Torquay you've got to book it - you won't be disappointed!!!More

A small restaurant well worth searching out. The food is wonderful, freshly made by the chef /owner. One may wait a little longer but the result is excellent. The serving staff obviously enjoy working there and gave a very pleasant service. I'm sure the Old...Vienna has a regular clientèle resulting from the long residency and attention of the owner but his welcome is extended to visitors alike.More

Interesting menu options using fresh tasting ingredients. I cannot vouch for the authenticity of the “Austrian” tastes, but it stands out as doing something different. Great food in a small restaurant- you know the chef is cooking for you!

The menu choice is varied with a lot of different types of dishes, all well cooked and flavoursome, and reasonably priced. The place has a nice...ambiance and it’s well recommended, will return.More
