We dined here at Gars with some friends (another couple), who we had not seen for a while - they wanted to come here as it was the first time for them. We would have preferred to have been given an table on the upper floor with a view over the lanes as usual, but it was booked for a... More

Food was good quality but pretty standard Chinese fair. The prices here are very high for the type of food and the portion size is not what I'd call generous. Drinks are also pretty expensive. Service was okay but not fantastic as i would have expected for the price.

This Chinese restaurant has had its ups and downs in the past but the last three times I have been here it has been really good food and great service. It's not cheap but it has to be one of the best Chinese restaurants in Brighton.

We had previously booked a table but arrived early , was greeted by the manager to be told your table isn't quite ready yet ... not a problem we left & went for a drink nearby in the lanes . Second take we were shown to our table upstairs in the middle level which was lovely . Our coats were... More

I have been a regular customer of Gars for many years, but have recently noticed a drop in quality and a hike in prices over the last few visits. And on my recent visit today with family for lunch I was completely shocked to be served a chicken satay starter that was so badly cooked (or undercooked) it could have... More

I am an absolute dim sum fiend, and having lived in Brighton for ages without ever visiting Gars I decided it was about time and didn't come away disappointed! It's definitely a step up from your average Chinese, with clean decor and warm service. We ordered the har gow, siu mai (x2), char siu bao, chicken and mushroom buns and... More

Visited Gars on a Sunday afternoon with a family group of 10. It seemed like we must of had pretty much everything on the menu. Could not fault any dish or service.

Nice restaurant it's been here for many years, top of the range pricing for Chinese in Brighton but foods ok and staff are pleasant & attentive. I remember 10/15 years ago I'd have given it the full 5stars but didn't feel the WoW factor it had then, but never the less a nice place to eat.

This is the best Chinese we have ever eaten!! We ordered so much so they served a few at a time, we ordered from the dim sum menu and I'm glad we did. There was so many dishes we had never tried before but there wasn't a thing I didn't like. The service was impeccable, very polite and observant, so... More

Fantast food, amazing service. Topped off by the owner walking us round to a local bar, to get us on the guest list and miss the queues. Thank you so much!

Description
A Brighton institution in the heart of the famous Lanes, Gars has been serving Chinese food with attitude for nearly 30 years. This family-run restaurant is smart, sophisticated and streamlined, with polished bamboo flooring and modern silk shades. It’s set over three floors, with a private function room and bar downstairs (with the possibility of karaoke if the mood takes you), a ground-floor section with red-leather panelling and soft lighting, and the first-floor dining rooms. The food is a clever mix of classic and modern Chinese, alongside other Asian favourites like Thai green curry and salmon teriyaki. Start with tender beef carpaccio served with sesame and chilli dressing, then dither between fresh scallops in black bean sauce, lamb shanks with ginger and spring onions or the sensationally savoury Cantonese roast duck.
