There's no doubt that the setting, and general ambiance of this pub cum restaurant are very good. The staff are helpful and there is a good selection of drinks. The fact that the menu could be described as limited in comparison to some places should be seen as a plus as you know it is not just a packet being... More

A wonderful little hide out in the middle of nowhere. Superb service and food Beautiful garden and so well kept. Menu was varied and well above your standard pub food choices. I had steak which I can safely say was the best steak I have had for a long long time. My husband was happy as the barman knew what... More

Stopped off here for lunch and were made immediately welcome by all staff. Menu and wine list are both extensive and interesting. Food was top notch, especially the roe deer. Would definitely visit again when in the area. If relying on satnav, be careful - don't go up the unmade road opposite Plumpton racecourse unless you have a 4x4!

We were in the past regulars at this pub/restaurant, but it went through a very bad patch with extremely slow service and rather average food. However a review in The Telegraph recently made us consider a meal there. It is apparently still under the same owner but some improvements have been made, and some errors. I will deal with the... We decided to have our Saturday lunch at the Jolly Sportsman after a long walk on the Sussex Downs. The car park was full so we anticipated that the pub would be very busy as it was such a beautiful day. But as soon as we entered we were greeted by a friendly waiter who immediately offered us one of... More

We eat regularly here - or as regularly as we can bearing in mind we have to drive across Sussex to get here. It is quite the best restaurant for miles and miles. The cooking is so good. It is simply in a different class. And the prices are so reasonable and the service so quick. The set lunch is... More

We are not regular visitors to the JS as we live some distance away. As we knew we would be in the vicinity, we decided to have dinner here again as it has always been an excellent experience in the past. It was good that our expectations were met, perhaps exceeded. We had a great meal and my wife thought... More

We came here for lunch on a lovely sunny (though chilly) day. we had drinks in the garden but it was a bit too cold to stay out for long, so came indoors into the garden room. Chef was offering a 2-course meal for £17.90 or 3-courses for a bit more, with a choice of starter, main and dessert. We... More

I have been going to the 'Jolly' for 35 yrs Under various owners , the restaurant under its current ownership has been quite variable and a bit inconsistent. The last three times have been good and it seems to be back on track , we booked a table in he bar ( best in winter as near the fire and... More

Whether you like the new gastro pub version of the JS or not; my feedback is entirely to do with the attitude of the host (owner?) We arrived at 12.00 on Saturday and were confronted by the above, I asked politely if we could have something to eat (at this point no one else in pub). "Just sandwiches starters, quick... More
