Visited with a group of friends and were welcomed by Carmen and her team to a lovely lunch. There are super cakes as well as a varied menu, and surroundings that lead to some interesting walks - make sure to enjoy too

Nice place en route down to Keswick, with a bonus of the Mirehouse and gardens across the road. Lots of Cake to choose from to go with a nice cup of tea, inside and outside seating

This place was advertised as open until 5pm. Arrived at 4pm. We were told couldn't have crockery as the dishwasher wasn't working, only disposable takeaway available to eat outside. I was surprised at this, since there were four staff standing round doing very little and...only one customer. Very clearly they could have given us the usual service and earthenware plates etc if they'd wanted to - (after all, the very next morning when we passed through the dishwasher was obviously working again - or rather they were not all trying to rush off and close early in the mornings). At 4.15 they started putting things away. At exactly 4.30pm and elderly man arrived having walked 10-15 miles and wanted a cup of tea and maybe a cake. He was told, we're closed, the nearest place was Keswick and he could get the bus. There were four members of staff remember, only offering take away and to sit outside. It would have taken no time at all to serve this man - but shutting early appeared to be the priority for all of them! They shut the door, three of them left. Whilst I finished my take away tea, a total of six people came up before 5pm, looking for refreshments. Missed sakes opportunities, disappointed customers, inconsiderate and apparently uncaring service. I don't understand why when you have four staff on, you'd refuse to care for customers and close early. This is a lovely venue, and there were two further occasions we could have stopped to have cake and coffee whilst in the area, we didn't, we drove past because of how we, and especially the elderly and tired were treated with no care at all. Hopefully this review will be read and consideration of others improve going forward.More

Visited today on a bike ride. The staff couldn't look more miserable and couldn't have been more rude. I queued up to buy my can of drink. I got asked if that's was all I wanted. I replied no and I would in fact like...eggs on toast please. The staff member looked at me as if this was a huge inconvenience to her. The eggs arrived terribly undercooked and snotty. Whereas my friend's scrambled eggs were overcooked and dry. There was no sugar or sweetener available for tea. Considering a cup of tea cost 2.50 the pot of milk they gave us was tiny. Won't ever go back even though it's a local cafe to me, purely because the staff couldn't be more unfriendly and the breakfasts were terrible.More

What a fantastic afternoon tea! We have toured many places and this is simply the best! There was so much: tuna, ham, egg, cheese sandwiches, whole pork pies and sausage rolls served with salad and sweet chilli peppers- delicious and chutney, cheese scones with slices...of cheddar cheese. However, that was not all! A separate serving of chocolate and raspberry tart, blueberry and almond cake, ginger cake, key lime pie and chocolate strawberries! All for two people. All made fresh, tasty and moist. There was so much we had to be selective of what we left- difficult choice! Service was friendly and excellent! You must book in advance. Being totally honest this is the best afternoon tea ever. Highly recommended!More

Went here today after a 4 mile walk round Dodd with three small children. Ordered two drinks and a cake. Two of the children have very strict dietary requirements for health reasons, I have a disease which means I can only eat and drink certain...things and there was nothing on the menu some of us could eat. We took the food and drink we ordered to a table outside and took out some snacks and drinks out our bag for the children. About 15 minutes later a woman opens the cafe window and shouts out to us that tables are for customers only. This was in front of the children and a terrace full of other customers. We replied that we are customers and we’ve just bought from the cafe. She said in a sarcastic sneery voice “What two drinks”. We pointed out we’d paid for food and drink so ARE customers then she said “Would you bring your own food to a pub”. No but if I was at a pub and my kids were with me I’d bring appropriate snacks for them especially with their requirements. She then started moaning it’s her business (maybe be better at customer service then?) and kept banging on so my husband told her he’d heard her the first time and to give it a rest. Very embarrassing for her that she shouted at customers that way. If you’re going to run a tea room at the bottom of a fell accept that people will be thirsty and will drink what they are able to drink, and that dietary requirements will seriously limit some people’s ability to order from menus. But we HAD ordered. We did see her point but it’s the way she went about it - she should have come out to us, not yelled out the window, and had a quiet word - at which point we’d have explained about our dietary requirements and that we actually WERE customers. There was no need for the snarky attitude and to be rude about what we’d ordered. We climb Dodd often and we will never visit here again and advise people steer clear. We were actually going to order more drinks as we were very thirsty but I will never give this place my money againMore

Pleasant setting with fire etc, idea for walkers to refresh and warm up. However the staff need some coffee training …£2.80 for a small latte that has been frothed to the point of boiling milk is totally unacceptable. The coffees we ordered were all scalding...which ruined the drink and obviously had no foam because it had been boiled and were all exactly the same even though sold as different coffee. Cakes etc were all very expensive for the quality; if you’re going to charge a fair price for a product it needs to resemble what you’re selling!More

We had walked the ascent of Dodd - which is well recommended for the views - and were ready for our lunch when we came across this place on the way down. We sat outside with our dog, and the sandwiches were served pretty promptly....The were obviously freshly made, and were on a lovely soft cob, and very tasty. The cake was good too, that we took back to our hotel to enjoy a bit later. No complaints, would recommend.More

There is building work going on at the moment but the ladies running this cafe were carrying on as normal - cheerful and friendly! We were the first customers of the day, had a delicious bacon sandwich and coffee. We returned some hours later (after...a days walking) for a welcome pot of tea and cake! I must say the toilets adjacent to the cafe were the cleanest and tidiest l’ve used this week!More

It was lunch break when we visited and because the inside was closed it was busy at both the hatch and the inside queue. We ordered soup and unfortunately although it was very nice soup, mine was cold. It took about 15 minutes to get...it back and then it was too hot to eat. To be fair it was delicious when I reheated it at dinner time. Husbands roll already had butter or margarine- not sure which added to it - so I’m glad I didn’t order one as I don’t eat spread. Lunchtime selection fairly small, but the posh sausage rolls looked good. Our coffees were nice and the tray-bakes looked good, one more for an afternoon or mid morning stop.It is a lovely location and the staff are very pleasant although seem to be a bit overwhelmed.More
