So straightaway: "Would you like Indian beer?" The Indian beer is about £4.65 as opposed to £3.80 for a (small) bottle of Cobra / Kingfisher. "Would you like poppadoms? 4 ?" They are 80p each - we were charged £4.20 on our bill as opposed to £3.20. I order a chicken curry and a naan. "So that's chicken curry, naan... More

Somehow one of our friends thought this is a good place and we landed up here.... It was empty we were the only ones... Still the staff was extremely extremely rude... On top of all this they charged extra for drinks.... Never never go.... You will repent

Decent Indian food and nice quiet restaurant in the middle of Soho. Very affordable, simple without the fancy over complication that you so often get.

I feel this place is misunderstood. Yes, it is quite dated and the staff are a little odd, but the curry is absolutely spot on - excellent naga chicken, very good aloo gobi (lovely firm cauliflower - a pleasant change from the mush you usually get at Indians - with perfect potato) and in general the food was flavoursome, hot... We are very regular eaters of Indian food in London and tried the Golden Oven as it was conveniently located in Soho, near the theatre we'd visited. It was our first time here and I can't imagine we'll return. Everything was average at best. Service was neither fast nor friendly; food lacked any spark or "zing", too bland and too... More

The office were taken to the Golden Oven by a colleague (whose first choice was closed) one Friday lunchtime. The restaurant is small and very dated, some of the review stickers in the window are from over a decade ago. I completely agree with other reviews, the food is distinctly average with some poppadoms looking and tasting very similar to... More

Small Indian restaurant in Soho. Good food. Service was fine and good value considering the location.

We did not plan to dine in Golden oven but after few cocktails in Soho we were looking for a good curry house and stumbled across Golden Oven. We thought we will give it a try. We can’t really complain about the food. Portions were reasonably sized even though my paneer was on a spicy side which I did not... More

There was only one other couple eating at the restaurant when we passed but decided to go in as we were in a bit of a hurry. Waiter was very slow and didn’t come to offer us a drink. Waived him over once we decided on menu. The portion sizes were the smallest I have ever seen at an Indian... More

First, the good. The location is good and they have a cheap set menu. The chicken jalfrezi was nice and I couldn't fault the rice. Now, the bad. The mattar paneer was poor and the cheese naan made me sad. The service was atrocious. Once it looked like our main courses were nearly finished, all three of the waiters repeatedly... More

Description
Situated on Bateman Street in the heart of the West End, the Golden Oven is ideal for long lunches and pre-theatre dinners, especially if you're a fan of authentic Indian food. The emphasis is on fresh spices and traditional recipes so you can be sure the dishes taste just as they would in India. The restaurant itself is relaxed and unpretentious, with friendly staff to guide diners through the extensive menu. Classics like lamb karahi and chicken madras are done very well here, but we recommend trying one of the chef's signature dishes. Try the garlic chilli chicken if you like your food hot and spicy, or go for a thali if you want to try a little bit of everything.

Staying in Soho

Neighbourhood Profile
Soho
The go-to district for a good time in London, Soho hosts a wealth of world-class theatres and a compelling lineup of cafes, restaurants, pubs, bars, and clubs. At Soho's core is London's original Red Light District and the epicenter of the LGBT scene – and thus the city's hottest nightlife. For shopping enthusiasts, Soho is not only the home of London's greatest concentration of boutique shops, but also the most strategic place to set off on a tour of the world's most celebrated department stores. In the southern part of the neighbourhood lies Chinatown, with its multitude of delicious and affordable restaurants. Closer to the Thames, Chinatown's narrow and teeming lantern-lit lanes spill onto the expansive hub of glitzy Leicester Square.
