We had our department's Christmas party at the Bird of Smithfield and everyone had a fantastic time. We had pre-dinner drinks in the Birdcage basement bar, dinner in the first floor restaurant, returning to the Birdcage for drinks and dancing. The staff are exceedingly friendly and accommodating, nothing was too much trouble. The food was amazing and the service excellent.... More

My partner and I hosted a dinner in the private dining space following our civil ceremony. We started the night playing records and drinking in the lounge area of the room. Our server was very attentive, making sure our drinks were topped up and that everyone was comfortable, without being overbearing. We moved to the long table for our three-course... More

Went on the recommendation of a group I belong to and was not disappointed. We could have eaten all the starters and the service was excellent throughout. Mains had 3 fish choices and one vegetarian and 3 meat choices. Best of all was the pistachio soufflé within a bitter chocolate ice cream. All in all would thoroughly recommend

So Guy Fieri says go here and have the Shepherds Pie, and that's exactly what I did. When you walk in this place you're a little confused because it's a bar. The restaurant is nestled away upstairs in this small elegant area. Yes, you should dress up a little more than casual so you don't feel under dressed. Okay now... More

Superb meal, great service, fabulous wine. We had a 40 person meal, booking out the entire restaurant. Scallop, amazing. Veal was delicious. Cheese to die for. Good Sauvignon Blanc. Service was perfect.

Had date night here last Friday as we heard the new menu was fantastic... and it delivered. We started the night off with a few cocktails on the main floor and then moved upstairs for our meal. I had the veal and my partner had the sea bream but the highlight was probably the compressed pineapple for dessert- what a... More

I came here for a lunch meeting and to be honest I was very underwhelmed by the 2 vegetarian options on the menu (one started and one main). As a vegetarian it really annoys me that restaurants lazily don't have enough good vegetarian options on their menu. I can't remember what main I ordered (I literally just said "the vegetarian... We enjoyed the food and decor and service was good. If you live in the south coast you can go on the Thameslink, so although this is out of the main city areas, there are links

Tucked away in Smithfield is Bird. A great place for lunch in the restaurant or bar. Very friendly welcome, friendly, efficient service and very good food. The wine list is not lengthy but has a very interesting variety. Highly recommendable

Staying in City of London

Neighbourhood Profile
City of London
From its ancient past as a Roman trading outpost to its 21st century status as the wealthiest square mile in the world, the financial district known simply as “The City” is one of London's most historic and fascinating neighbourhoods. Here high rise office towers such as Norman Foster’s Gherkin mingle with Roman ruins and architectural marvels from virtually every era in between, including Christopher Wren's glorious St.Paul's Cathedral, and John Soane's dauntingly classicist Bank of England. This neighbourhood is also home to some of the finest restaurants and plushest hotels in Europe, in addition to an assortment of of watering holes, upscale shops, and Tube stations. During the week, the City is abuzz with white collar workers going about their business; the weekend sees this area turn into a quiet haven for sightseers.
