This old school restaurant is steeped in history. Mainly fish classics, good wine and great atmosphere, helped by the table arrangements. Start with a black velvet and take your time over great fresh fish. There are so few of these restaurant types left in London, it's really worth a visit. Arrive at 12:00 as they do not take bookings.

The thing about Sweetings is that it is timeless - unchanged since the time of Dickens (except they now take credit cards as well as cash/cheque). getting there early enables you to choose a place - I like the tables with the high stools that enable you to look out through the windows. Everything is cheek by jowl here so... More

The venue is fun; old fashioned, not smart, lot of character, very much appealing to tourists on a nostalgic kick. Good bar with lots of silver tankards; very limited and expensive wine list. The food is OK, not good; customers are definitely not there for the food, but very old fashioned; almost all the puddings were steamed; treacle, spotted dick,... More

Consistently great fish for past 3 decades, wonderful atmosphere with colourful characters and friendly, polite old fashioned service, The scampi and Skate are especially good and if you are lucky the staff will offer you a free of port to make way for other waiting clients.

Food....well do get the grilled skate wing, peas and mashed potatoes as these were excellent, world class preparations. Wine bar extraordinaire but did I mention Guiness served in a silver mug? Oh yes, oysters on the half shell and on and on for fish or meat. You walk in to a place serving lunch from 1830 onward, a huge gaggle... More

Cozy, and hopping at lunch hour. Food and service exceptional. Must try the sticky toffee pudding! Had the traditional fish and chips, and it was amazing. Great people watching for an American! Because this was truly a British local destination ....

We went there on a Friday lunchtime (this restaurant is only open at lunchtimes on Monday to Friday). There is no booking system, so we arrived, had a drink and waited a short time for a space on the stools. The service is personal and attentive. We had the lobster bisque, I had grilled skate with butter and caper sauce... More

If you hanker for fish for lunch, served fresh and in a place that us still a City institution, this is the place to come. I had lobster bisque and then grilled sea bass with buttered spinach. It was well presented, tasted delicious and prompt. I enjoy this place. Try it for yourself. It might be viewed by some as... More

We wanted to have lunch in one of the oldest restaurants in London so were immediately disappointed by the very modern, airy, white interior which resembled an ice-cream parlour with its tall stools beside white narrow raised "tables". We ventured further to the back and were ushered into a more atmospheric table area with seating reminiscent of school dinners, thoroughly... More

Proper city lunch spot. Best for pretending the credit crunch never happened and long boozy lunches are still a thing. Check out the city gents (using the word 'gent' loosely) Oysters are amazing, wine is well matched, service is v English and understated. Fish pie is great, as is the smoked haddock. The sides are unremarkable but you didn't come... More

Staying in City of London

Neighbourhood Profile
City of London
From its ancient past as a Roman trading outpost to its 21st century status as the wealthiest square mile in the world, the financial district known simply as “The City” is one of London's most historic and fascinating neighbourhoods. Here high rise office towers such as Norman Foster’s Gherkin mingle with Roman ruins and architectural marvels from virtually every era in between, including Christopher Wren's glorious St.Paul's Cathedral, and John Soane's dauntingly classicist Bank of England. This neighbourhood is also home to some of the finest restaurants and plushest hotels in Europe, in addition to an assortment of of watering holes, upscale shops, and Tube stations. During the week, the City is abuzz with white collar workers going about their business; the weekend sees this area turn into a quiet haven for sightseers.
