We visited with two family for dinner. The restaurant is very attractive, the food was delicious, and the service was very attentive. The location is beautiful right of the bank of the Cherwell out in the meadows, and would be a better choice for lunch...More

Having read good reports about this restaurant the 8 of us decided to celebrate our bi-annual reunion there. The restaurant was very busy and quite small. The menu was quite limited and they had run out of sole. We were offered skate as a substitute...More

Great location set by the river and popular with groups going punting from there. Good and atmosphere enjoyable.

We went here to celebrate the younger brother's birthday, it was a big one so picked a destination worthy of the occasion. Our Nan who is 91 was travelling down to join us from Birmingham but they got stuck in traffic so we phoned up...More

The restaurant has a great outlook over the river and a light airy dining room. We were given a lovely welcome and the service all evening was excellent. It was busy but not overcrowded and the staff managed the perfect balance between appearing at appropriate...More

We had a lovely afternoon tea at the boathouse. It's a beautiful setting and they have a delicious selection of treats included in the reasonable price. The only issue was the salted caramel slice tasted off. The waiter was great about it but the chef...More

I went here with my wife and our chihuahua early in the evening. We had excellent service and I got to try Oxford white wine which is not as bad as it sounds. We had a tasty vegetable starter. My sole was the best I...More

My partner and I have loved going to the Cherwell Boathouse for a number of years, but our visit last weekend was not a good experience. The service was slow, we repeatedly had to signal to catch the waiters' attention, and saw them standing about,...More

The location is by far the best thing about this well-known Oxford establishment. From our window-side table, we watched students and tourists punting with mixed success on the river Cherwell, on the sunny October Sunday we visited. Our first impressions were positive, the main dining...More

Trousers and shirt would definitely be ok whereas I’m not sure about jeans. Would have been fine when I went at lunch time but I think in the evening it would be smarter.

You've planned an afternoon punting a la Sebastian Flyte - you've got the boater, the stripy blazer, the wind-up gramophone and the obligatory teddy bear, but whoops, forgotten the picnic. Instead of eating sweaty sandwiches, plan your punting excursion round eating at Cherwell Boathouse. Owned and run by the same family for the past 30 years, Cherwell Boathouse, as its name suggests is right on the banks of the Isis (Oxford speak for the Thames) in a truly scenic spot. The restaurant is small and intimate with a beautiful terrace but not twee. The atmosphere is buzzy and lively and there is a huge range of age groups. However, if you are truly set on a picnic, the restaurant will organise a hamper for a minimum of 15 people if you pre-order. What's cooking: Fish Terrine with a light crab mayo; fragrant Thai broth, crispy sea bream with courgette and carrot tagliatelle on a bed of noodles with a tomato and caper jus; baked breast of mallard with a cranberry compote; white chocolate and ginger torte; chocolate layered crepe cake.
