Nothing about this restaurant tells you it is anything other than standard Chinese. That is a shame because the food really is a cut above. Good selection, friendly staff, and a willingness to adjust the menu for specialist or picky eaters.

On George Street, Oxford's restaurant road, this is an extremely well established place. There's an extensive range of authentic dishes, a level above the standard British Chinese restaurant. Sadly, when I last visited, the service let them down: appetiser arriving after the main dish had been delivered. Food is good, though.

Serves a great hot pot, which can be tailored to your satisfaction. The rest of the food is great too- what you'd expect from any good Chinese (e.g Dim Sum and Roast pork) plus a few quirky options. Would definitely label this place as authentic- seems to appeal to a lot of Chinese students. Service is pretty good but my... More

A simple review really - fancied a Chinese meal, was walking past and saw that it was busy, then was glad we did. We had a set menu with one ingredient tweak and everything was great. The red wine was decent too.

We came in here Friday before Christmas as Oxford was quiet si thought they may have room. Had set menu A for 2. Not had a proper Chinese in years. This is in a different league to our local takeaways. We thought about the mixed starter, we're glad we didn't have it. Good food cooked well and enormous portions. Exactly... More

My favorite Chinese restaurant!! Eaten there many times and place is always busy. Food is fantastic and very tasty. Good choice of vegetarian dishes as I'm vegetarian. Friendly and professional staff.

Approx £25 per head for hotpot. Great variety of foods, and there is a condiment corner at the back of the restaurant where you can mix your own sauce (they have garlic, spring onion, chilli, another hot sauce, BBQ sauce, peanut sauce, sesame sauce, soy sauce, Chinese vinegar, and more). The hotpots were separated in two, with a normal broth... More

We ate here as we had been many years ago. It was quite full even quite early in the evening. The choice of food is not like you typical takeaway there being a much wider and different choice. We chose one of the set menus so we could sample a choice of dishes. All the food was really tasty and... More

First impressions to this Chinese restaurant is its name, Opium Den, which is easily linked with the Opium War or called Anglo-Chinese War during 1839-1842. But of course, this restaurant opened in 1977, and bare no any connection with that war, just a name. Perhaps on the purpose to attract more customers, especially those who are from China. The location... More

To give you an immediate idea- the food and atmosphere had been so good we ate there twice during our stay in Oxford. We were given a choice of seats to sit at as a couple, which was a nice start. The menus contain pictures of some of the meals which helps as a guide for many other wide selections.... More
