We took the family here for Sunday lunch after hearing mixed reviews (mainly negative reviews on appearance rather than service or food)
Personally we could have overlooked the dated decor and slightly slow service had the food been better. However unfortunately the food was very salty and vegetables were slightly overcooked.
Meat was tasty and Yorkshire puddings were large and crisp on the outside, exactly as we like them.
Overall an okay experience, which could be made so much better with a little bit of extra attention to detail.
We would return and try it again.

We were staying and decided to try the restaurant.
Sea bass was excellent.
Rib eye steak was pretty ropey. Grisly, chewy and not a good cut at all.
As soon as the staff realised we had a bad meal they “disappeared”. We eventually ordered a dessert but it didn’t arrive after 15/20 minutes so we gave up. Still no staff in sight.
It was a shame, anyone can get a bad meal but a good restaurant knows how to deal with it

We had a drink in the bar area, while waiting for all six of us to arrive. We viewed the menus before heading through to the dining room. The bar staff were very friendly, chatty and welcoming. The waitress in the dining room however was the opposite, off-hand and just generally stand offish and didn't manage a smile the whole time we were there!
The Sunday roast was nice, the portion size of the meat excellent, as were the vegetables but only came with two small roast potatoes, which was a pity. The slow overnight cooked roast beef however was rather chewy and certainly not cooked overnight! Service was good, efficient and speedy.

The service in the restaurant is slow and the staff are rude.
We came for Sunday lunch on 29/09/24. The first lady that served us quibbled the kids eat free on Sunday even though it is written in large letters on the menu. We asked for a high chair which was forgotten about so we had to search for someone to get one.
It took a long time for someone to come over to take our food orders. The starters came out wrong. When we said the starters were wrong the server didn’t apologise.
We then waited a long time for the plates to be cleared. We then had to search for someone again to take the pudding order. The young man we found in the main dining area looked annoyed when we asked for pudding order.
The pudding came out without the icecream on it (pancake stack with icecream as advertised on the menu) but by this point we had given up trying to find someone to complain. The cheesecake also had a very strange consistency.
We then went to pay and all the kids food was on the bill. So we had to complain and remind them about the free kids food offer again.
All in all the service was laughably very bad and slow. It took 3 hours to have a lunch here due to slow service. We would not go for food here again. It’s a shame because it’s a nice looking place but the levels of service in the restaurant do not match the grandeur of the hotel.

Don’t go here! The food was borderline inedible and the manager was unprofessional and rude!
We were told the Portuguese chef had seasoned the food according to his taste - the gravy was so salty it was almost pure soy sauce and should have come with a health warning!
This was advertised as a Sunday Roast with seasonal veg - we were served frozen, stewed veg consisting of spring onions, celery, and some other unrecognisable greens - better suited to a stir fry. Potatoes and other roast veg was over cooked to the point of caramelisation.
No reduction was given by the rude manager, Jeremy Pfaff. It was overpriced even if it had been edible.
Do not go here - it was absolutely awful and ruined our day.

Festive Afternoon Tea
All I can say is what a disappointment! The website describes finger sandwiches, festive cakes and scones with clotted cream and jam
The sandwiches were normal sandwiches cut in half, they were so thick and dry. Fillings were beef and horseradish, dry turkey, cheese and tomato, Brie and cranberry and something else, there were terrible. Where’s the egg and cress, salmon and cucumber, coronation chicken ???
There were 3 of us and 4 sandwiches cut in half.
In terms of festive cake yes there was a small mince pie each, nothing else was festive, there was no stollen, no Christmas cake, no gingerbread.
The scones were dry and there was no clotted jam and the thinnest spread of jam I have ever seen
We paid ÂŁ66 and to be honest was really really poor and absolutely not worth the money
Do not bother - try somewhere else

We went to celebrate my son’s birthday having previously (over 2 years) enjoyed many special meals at the Castle.
It was advertised that a free meal was available for an infant… but this was not honoured. It was advertised with a large sign that there was a carvery (this is what we had previously enjoyed at the Castle) … but this was not available.
The baby changing facilities were broken, dangerous and had to be held up with my daughter in laws knee to make work.
We left without eating. Very disappointing.

Avoid if you can. We waited 45 minutes for our entrances which were not complicated. We wanted sheep to come back to tell us that it is not cooked while we were 2/3 of the service. The burger was mediocre. The correct sea bass. In short, total disorganization. A very bad experience.

A colleague and I were staying the night here and had ordered our meals by 8.20pm as requested.
A table wasn’t ready then so we ordered drinks and went to the lounge where a couple of tables were occupied by guests with the rest of the tables occupied by dirty glasses. We shared a table with crisp packets that had been left behind.
I think the staff had forgotten we were waiting for a dinner table. Our table was next to a fire extinguisher which could not have been accessed because of the table.
My small solitary fish cake arrived and I ordered a bread roll as bread was not offered. It arrived after I’d finished my starter and was very hot to touch. Sadly it was still frozen inside.
Our main courses arrived at about 9.45pm but we’d lost the will to eat by then really. The rock hard batter on my fish was difficult to break but once inside the fish was nice and tasty.
All in all, a poor performance from this venue.

Having eaten here before I was quite looking forward to Sunday lunch, the initial welcome was fine but after being shown into the dining room our waitress was very dour, I know people can have a bad day but this was someone who seemed very unhappy to be there.
I had a starter of Prawn Cocktail which arrived deconstructed on a plate rather than as a "cocktail", small amount of prawns with a dollop of sauce over the top, ok it is a starter. My mains however consisted of a couple of slices of beef, some flaccid slices of parsnip, and a roast potato, there was a small dish with carrots and cabbage and a further small dish with red cabbage, it would seem that they are embracing a low carb diet as there was no boiled or mashed potatoes to help fill out the meal which although tasty was frugal.
As I was still hungry I went for the dessert option and had the Lemon Meringue Roulade, my disappointment on seeing the 5mm slice of Roulade must have been evident as the waitress scuttled off. I can only say that the one plus point is that there were roadside burger vans on the way home, as I left both light in pocket and stomach. A return visit is not on the cards

Sunday Lunch, the meat was all dry, as if pre carved earlier and then plated later, and not carved to order. But the beed was inedible, overcooked so bad we had to ask for a sharp knife and still we left it as it was chewy. On the positive the starters and desserts and the vegetables were lovely and service is great.
The head Chef needs to taste the food thats going on and not serve what is basically inedible meat.
Would not go back again.

Our family Christmas meal booked here months ago in advance, was a total disaster. We were all (12) seated in the Library area for 2pm. Took our order at 2pm but our starters didn't arrive until 2.40pm. Our tomato soups were luke warm and must have been childs portions. Served in a white bowl with two wrapped portions of butter and a pale oven ready roll. Pate was served stirred in a round bowl with no garnish. Garlic mushrooms, no garnish. Very, very poor, the presentation was awful and cheap looking.
The main course arrived and was absolutely terrible!
All our meals were extremely poor and totally unappetising and some, inedible.
Our beef dinner meals had two rock hard over roasted potatoes and a cheap shop bought yorkshire. The barly warm beef slices were chewy alongside a scoop of cold mash and instant gravy. Presentation was awful. None of us had peas, carrots , boiled potatoes or any other veg as we were told by staff that none was available. A large bowl of savoy cabbage was on the table with a couple bowls of blackend burned cauliflower cheese. Turkey meals had, upon asking had cranberry sauce served in soup bowls. We were all shocked and disgusted by all this. We had so looked forward to this occasion and we were so disappointed having enjoyed meals there many times over past years.
Serving staff seemed embarrassed to serve us our 'meals'. The supervisor was highly sarcastic to us when we calmly and fairly complained. and expressed our disappointments withe both the starters and our main meals.
We then asked to see the manager who later arrived and suprised us as she was the same person who took our meal and starter orders.
After making known our profound disappointments she could plainly see on our table that all our meals were barely touched, she offered no reason at all for why our meals were so bad and unfortunately, she failed to apologise to us at all. All she said was that she would not charge us for our meals.
Following this, we decided not to stay for desserts and we all immediately left and walked to Wetherspoons to have some snacks .
We will NOT be returning here again !

We have always enjoyed a Sunday lunch carvery here, on Sunday we were looking forward to our meal but were left disappointed and hungry. We arrived and were shown to our table in the restaurant, we were shocked to find it empty- it is usually packed. We then found that there is no longer a carvery, the food is brought to you on a plate, 2 small slices of beef , a Yorkshire pudding, a small amount of broccoli, a small amount of cauliflower , a few carrots and a couple of roast potatoes which had the taste of having been warmed up, there was a drizzle of gravy over the dinner. We waited forever for our food even though it was empty. Gone are the days where you had a good choice of meats, there’s now only beef or pork. The prices have increased and the portions are much smaller. We all left there hungry, this used to be the best place to go for Sunday lunch, now it is the worst.

We have been dining here for 15 years, and have never had a bad meal, until Sunday 19 Dec. We were told to expect a wait when seated at our table, as they were serving a party of 30. We had our starters, my salt and pepper squid was excellent, my husband had tomato soup which he could not eat and described as sugar and basil soup. After 45 mins we enquired re the mains, as did the lady on the next table. We were told would not be long. My husband asked how long, and the waitress said she would find out, and explained they were serving between a party of 30. After another 20 minute wait, in which the waitress had not returned, we walked out. I emailed a complaint on returning home, and have not received a reply. Will now look for another restaurant.
