Good main course. We are very aware of allergies as my daughter suffers from a nut allergy. We were shocked to find that their allergen advice on desserts containing nuts such as ameretto or Nutella failed to mention the nut content. When we tried to point this out the staff were totally dismissive of the seriousnesss of this error and... More

We booked ahead as a foursome, and when we arrived were shown to our table straight away. Waiter was friendly and knowledgeable enough. We had a drink to start, and then ordered our food and wine. Starters were all very good - my Calamari was perfection, and my Wife's pate excellent. Main courses were mostly very good, although I was... More

In Edinburgh for long weekend and passed this restaurant several times and it was always busy therefore yesterday we decided to have lunch before leaving for home, we were not disappointed the service was second to none the server took time to explain the specials and how the meals were cooked etc. We are a family of six from 12/70... We visited here for lunch on a rugby international match day and it was absolutely packed out! Despite this, the service was quick and the food was delicious! Just make sure you book in advance!

A very busy restaurant near theatres and a concert hall. Essential to book. Really good Italian food served fresh and piping hot. The staff were excellent and the wine list pretty inviting. Reasonable prices. We would go back.

My first night in Edinburgh with friends and we were all hungry having just checked in to our hotel following our arrival from the airport. During a quick stroll around the locality we stumbled across Bar Italia by accident following a 'wrong turn'. It looked traditional and inviting so we decided to eat. The waitress was welcoming and very attentive.... More

Arrived and the place had clearly been overbooked. Staff were frantically trying to squeeze people in every gap. Making it so waiters actually couldn't get to tables!! Felt uncomfortable on arrival. Once seated everything was fine. Luckily we were sat at the edge and not in the middle of the crowd where people were being squeezed past. Spaghetti bolognese was... More

This restaurant was our second choice, as our first choice had closed down. We chose it primarily because it was close to our hotel on Bread Street (Hilton Double Tree) and didn't want to walk too far in the cold. However, we were all (four of us) pleased with the food, the portions, the drink selection and the service.

This restaurant was just down from our hotel. We went based on TripAdvisor reviews. I have to say it was wonderful. The food was great, it has a great selection. Very fresh and you can see the chef make the pizzas, which are huge. Our waiter Antonio was great so at tentative and funny. Would definitely recommend this place to... More

We visited here a couple of times once before Christmas and again last week. My wife's favourite has been removed from the menus so was disappointed on both occasions even after checking beforehand the meal would still be available. Disappointed

Staying in West End

Neighbourhood Profile
West End
Prevailing winds meant that most cities that grew in industrial Britain had their most desirable neighbourhoods to the west – upwind of factory fumes. Edinburgh was no exception, with its wealthiest citizens settling in its West End and leaving behind grand Georgian townhouses, private gardens and genteel crescents. These backstreets remain as dignified and sleepy as ever, and most of the action here lies along the district’s busy main roads. Lothian Road connects to southern Edinburgh and harbors a vague entertainment district: three theatres and the city’s main indie cinema. All attract a select crowd, the sort who appreciate the Saturday Edinburgh’s Farmers’ Market around the corner. The West End’s other great thoroughfare, Shandwick Place, is dominated by trams trundling out to the suburbs and airport, and shoppers picking up last-minute items before hopping aboard.
