Howie's came highly recommended but I must say my experience was disappointing. It has been two weeks since my visit and I can not remember my main dish nor sides. My dining companion also could not remember her food choices. I do remember the service was scattered. We had several servers and no one seemed to be in charge. The... More

First visit to Howies in the evening. Menu compact but reasonable but not remarkable choice. Portions are tiny & waiting staff should advise and upsell sides as they are really necessary. I would recommend checking the bill as a discretionary 10 service charge is added before the total is shown in bold. We added an additional 10% which wasn't really... More

I had dinner with a very old friend whom I hadn't met in years. We had lots to catch up on so we were pretty slow in ordering, but the staff (bless them!) were very patient, coming back to our table several times to see if we were ready to order or still immersed in conversation.

Was recommended here by the place we were staying "princes street apartment" and it did not fail! The food was fantastic and the guy with glasses serving us (didn't get his name sorry) was exceptional - really friendly and really knowledgeable of the food and also Edinburgh itself! We had three courses and my boyfriend had a blue steak which... More

Went with a large group of workmates for a team dinner. Howies is in the most beautiful building and the main dining room is a large pill shaped space with high ceilings and lots of original features. Despite its size and grandeur, Howies has a great and relaxed atmosphere. Although we were a large group of 15, our brilliant waitress... More

been here a few times, and it never disappoints, delightful staff. lovely surroundings, fantastic food - well prepared and presented, such a convenient location, and excellent value, my visit this week was every bit as good as usual, so add 'consistency' to the list of positives, simple - go here, you won;t be disappointed !

We booked Howies as a party of eight to celebrate my partners birthday.the menu is great with lots of traditional Scottish food and very reasonably priced. The set lunch menu is great value. It's a lovely room and nice location looking out over Carlton Hill. I have to say for us the service was very slow and it was an... More

We visited on Saturday eve as was so close to our hotel. The building itself is lovely and Britney our waitress was efficient and really friendly. Food was lovely- I had the beef casserole and friends had steak. All really well cooked and tasted great. Would definitely go back! Great evening.

Staying in Broughton & Calton

Neighbourhood Profile
Broughton & Calton
Lying where grandiose New Town townhouses give way to malls and utilitarian housing, Broughton and Calton have long been transitional neighbourhoods with a mixed identity. It’s here that Edinburgh’s gay village found a home in the 1980s. But gay culture is anything but overt along bustling epicentre Broughton Street; even if polished pubs, hip bistros, smart delis and art galleries all speak of affluent good taste. The top of Leith Walk is more ragged. This major thoroughfare boasts a famously gritty gay club, as well as a strip of good Indian restaurants. Regal Georgian and Victorian townhouses preside over largely deserted streets in Calton, where only the occasional restaurant or hotel brings much life. Even so, a steady trickle of idlers and picnickers pass by to climb Calton Hill for its wide-open lawns, wonderful city views, and curious monuments – an Athenian-style temple among them.
