This place is a bit run down but it's good authentic food at cheap prices. Noodles come in a massive bowl and is very popular with Asians which is a good sign. Cheap prices so good value for money

A family meal out and all 5 of us raved about our food. This is not an extravagantly decorated restaurant and I'm so glad it isn't as all the focus is on the food. There was no food envy as everyone was delighted with their choice! The roti cenai is delicious as were the ribs and wings. All the mains... More

Great surprise. So happy we found this. Doesn't look particularly amazing but the food is very authentic Malaysian and absolutely delicious. Very few Europeans which confirms the authenticity. Staff is friendly and great value for money. Will be back very soon.

A small restaurant that is easy to pass by, but once you've discovered Kampong Ah Lee you'll certainly want to head back! Went for the first time a couple of weeks ago and soon this will be my regular hangout. Lovely vibe, fantastic food and fair prices...what more could you want :)

My fiancé and I come here weekly on my days off from work. As a fellow Malaysian this is as close and as good as the food back at home! Amazing Kampong Ali also has a few other restaurants around in Edinburgh as well! Highly recommended!

Very informal cafe but wow. We were the only Europeans in there, great start. The food was fab. I was brought up in Singapore and Malaysia and it felt like going home. Sadly, it's a long way to go for nasi lemak but I will be back for the festival next year so roll on!

I'm a huge fan of Malaysian food so I was happy when Kampong Ah Lee opened in Edinburgh and completely blown away when I had my first meal there. Since it opened 6 (maybe more) years ago it has consistently been in my top 3 restaurants in Edinburgh. If you've eaten street food in Malaysia you'll feel right at home... More

Went there with my family for dinner We had the chicken rice, Cantonese fry noodle, curry new, roast duck nee and friends rice. It was definitely one of the best tasting Malaysian food I have experienced in the UK. Great service. Limited sitting area in the store But worth the wait

Thank Darren Y

Staying in Southside & Holyrood

Neighbourhood Profile
Southside & Holyrood
Many of Edinburgh’s student hangouts gather around university buildings in Southside, the sort of neighbourhood that supports a long string of second-hand shops and eateries serving ethnic food for just a few pounds. In August the student population is replaced by vast numbers of boisterous visitors here for the Fringe, Edinburgh’s world-class comedy and arts festival which headquarters itself here. Flanking Southside are two great parks. The Meadows is a vast flat and sporty space where football, rugby, tennis, cricket, croquet, and golf often all take place side by side. Kids in its big playgrounds add to the joyful noise. Far bigger and much wilder, Holyrood Park extends to the east and provides a real hike up Arthur’s Seat, but the district is best known as the site of Scotland’s Parliament and its premier Royal Palace—and their steady stream of sightseers.
