Next to the castle this classy establishment not only serves great food and wine but up to 420 Whiskys. Been here three times this week already. Great service and well worth a visit. The Chefs tapas selection is particularly interesting.

The Amber was just "okay" for me. It was highly rated on the Royal Mile next to the Edinburg Castle, so they have a lot of walking business. It is downstairs and the tables and chairs are not what I would call "fine dining" even though it is highly rated star-wise. I did enjoy the sampling of good Scottish food.... More

The food here is elegantly prepared with contemporary plating. Scottish dishes and new dishes with local flavor. The ambiance is hip but warm. We thoroughly enjoyed trying the Scottish cheese platter and when we asked, the kitchen selected a nice wine to accompany it for us. The lamb stovies has become our favorite dish so far, combining comfort food with... More

Stopped here for lunch because my first wife was getting tired. There was no fault with the food, and the serving staff was very helpful.

Great food and good prices, really nice environment, perfect and kind service. A must in Edinburgh for a Whisky experience. Small note to the service, the waitress is very kind and professional but with no experience in Whiskies, we expected more knowledge about Whisky.

Highly recommend checking out the Amber bar at the SWE. If you do not know what to try, ask the bar staff, they are very helpful, specifically Caleb (I think that was his name) Great value for whisky too

Stopped here for lunch after touring Edinburgh Castle. Very pleasant restaurant. I had the Brie and Chutney sandwich and husband had a cheese board with vegetable soup. Very good food and service. It was also a very relaxing, quiet break after the castle crowds.

Popped in here after visiting Edinburgh Castle for a light lunch. Really lovely staff and great, very affordable food. Would have loved to come back in the evening as the menu looked great, but sadly time didn't allow. Liked the whisky bar adjoining and the fact that young children were welcome to join their parents while they sampled the wares.

Staying in Old Town

Neighbourhood Profile
Old Town
Few Edinburghers live in the Old Town, but its labyrinth of dank alleys and steep streets suggests this was not always the case. Today, it’s mostly visitors, tartan-flavoured souvenir shops, and pipers that you’ll find on its cobbled streets. This is the place to get a feel for Auld Reekie (Old Smelly), as the town was once nicknamed, and stroll the Royal Mile, the thoroughfare that links the castle with the royal palace – two of Edinburgh’s great set-piece attractions. But there’s lots more exploring to do here down dozens of little alleys, or wynds, while at night the city’s busiest clubs erupt along the Cowgate which is closed to traffic for this purpose.
