We decided on this restaurant as it was a short distance away from where we were staying and Tripadvisor reviews were positive. Despite looking like a pub from the outside there is ample space for diners inside. The staff were very friendly and helpful with menu suggestions for my daughter who is dairy intolerant. The food was delicious and service... More

The burger is amazing and the chips are unbelievably nice. It was very close to where we stayed. The Dinning area is very comfortable and stylish.

My husband and I stopped in here for dinner as it was close to our hotel and we are so pleased that we did. The food was stunning - perfectly cooked, absolutely delicious with exquisitely balanced flavours and a good choice on the menu. It was very reasonably priced for the quality of the food. What really sets this place... More

This establishment is more restaurant than pub. The food was perhaps a little slow being delivered, but it was nicely prepared and delightfully presented. The five in our party all enjoyed the food greatly after a day of trekking about Scotland. The walk from city center was worth the effort. The server was polite and professional, and the facility was... More

I love the Magnum, i go there all the time. I'm fortunate enough to live close enough to walk there. One of my favourite things is to go there with my partner and our dog and have the fish and chips for dinner. It's always superb! I've stopped asking for the menu because i know what i want and i... It was recommended to us in the hotel and we went with not much expectation another pub serving food. What a surprise it was. It was Saturday on the day Scotland played rugby but there was no TV in there so we thought it will be ok. But it must be popular because all the tables were booked. We were... More

Specifically went here for a drink as they stock Valencia Gin. It was perfectly served with Pink Grapefruit and a sprig of fresh Rosemary - Well Done!

The Magnum is a 'classy' pub which sits alongside two rooms which house 'Gastro-pub'-style dining. The young staff are attentive and cheery, and went out of their way for us, which was nice. The bar, serving real ales and fine wines and nibbles, is cosy, if on occasion a bit noisy. The menu has many typical pub favourites like fish... More

A great place! Lovely staff who were on hand but not overbearing. I had the venison which was cooked beautifully and was very tasty. A good selection of food and a welcoming atmosphere.

Met my friend in Edinburgh for a speedy late lunch - the place we were going to go to had started closing on a Tuesday, so we ended up at The Magnum. Wowzers, what a find. My friend had been in for drinks before but I was a first time visitor. The menu was fantastic. 2 courses for £10.95 or... More

Description
For great food and wine and an old-fashioned good time, you can't go wrong with this delightful and traditional restaurant in Albany Street, Edinburgh. As you enter the dark, seductive dining room – filled with candles and tall palms – it will be a case of love at first sight and we guarantee you'll want to curl up in a corner and stay forever. The cosmopolitan crowd love the cosy, comfortable vibe, and we love the walls decorated with whisky-inspired poetry from a local writer. Signature dishes at The Magnum Restaurant include the rib-eye steak served with pink fir fries; the venison burger with chips cooked in delicious, salty beef dripping; and the tempura Peterhead haddock with lemon tartare and a green pea puree.

Staying in Broughton & Calton

Neighbourhood Profile
Broughton & Calton
Lying where grandiose New Town townhouses give way to malls and utilitarian housing, Broughton and Calton have long been transitional neighbourhoods with a mixed identity. It’s here that Edinburgh’s gay village found a home in the 1980s. But gay culture is anything but overt along bustling epicentre Broughton Street; even if polished pubs, hip bistros, smart delis and art galleries all speak of affluent good taste. The top of Leith Walk is more ragged. This major thoroughfare boasts a famously gritty gay club, as well as a strip of good Indian restaurants. Regal Georgian and Victorian townhouses preside over largely deserted streets in Calton, where only the occasional restaurant or hotel brings much life. Even so, a steady trickle of idlers and picnickers pass by to climb Calton Hill for its wide-open lawns, wonderful city views, and curious monuments – an Athenian-style temple among them.
