We stopped here for dinner (and lunch on another day) after reading the reviews, and we were not disappointed. The menu has a good mixture of dishes, including vegetarian options, and the service was very friendly and welcoming. The decor is very comfortable and colourful, which is always a plus point, although the toilets perhaps need a little refurbishment. It... More

My mother and I were attracted to Nom de Plume because of the beautiful flowers outside and the cheery impression it gave. The menu is a great mixture of Scottish dishes and vegan/vegetarian options, with lots of drinks to choose from. The location is central and the seating arrangements friendly and inviting, and the decor whimsical, eclectic and colorful The... More

Looking for something different not too far away from the city centre we booked a table here for dinner. From the front it looks like quite a small place but it is a bit of a tardis inside. The decor I can only describe as eclectic with many and varied items on display. Very pleasant staff serve very well cooked... More

I booked a table for 7 university friends (including me) who were meeting up from various parts of England and Scotland....with 20 years history as friends. We had a fantastic table where we could chat, eat wonderful food, share great wines and be tempted into ordering superb desserts. All of my friends commented on how wonderful the service and food... We stumbled across this place looking for a place to eat after arriving quite late in Edinburgh and we were not disappointed. Lovely staff, absolutely delicious food, lots of vegetarian and vegan options, very reasonably priced, nice wine. They'd run out of one the dishes we'd ordered, so they recommended an alternative (which was delicious), and gave us a free... More

This place is so friendly - staff are always so helpful and the other customers seem so chilled. The food is always nice and fresh. The last two visits I enjoyed seaweed hummus, sticky toffee pudding and veg curry - all of which was delicious. Soup of the day is usually great also. Myself and my family will continue to... More

Five of us had lunch here on Saturday. The atmosphere is great, so much to look at and absorb. The service is super friendly and the menu inspired. Three of us had a melanzane which was so tasty, one the haggis and neeps and finally a stuffed bagel. We were all more than happy with the whole experience until we... More

Staying in Broughton & Calton

Neighbourhood Profile
Broughton & Calton
Lying where grandiose New Town townhouses give way to malls and utilitarian housing, Broughton and Calton have long been transitional neighbourhoods with a mixed identity. It’s here that Edinburgh’s gay village found a home in the 1980s. But gay culture is anything but overt along bustling epicentre Broughton Street; even if polished pubs, hip bistros, smart delis and art galleries all speak of affluent good taste. The top of Leith Walk is more ragged. This major thoroughfare boasts a famously gritty gay club, as well as a strip of good Indian restaurants. Regal Georgian and Victorian townhouses preside over largely deserted streets in Calton, where only the occasional restaurant or hotel brings much life. Even so, a steady trickle of idlers and picnickers pass by to climb Calton Hill for its wide-open lawns, wonderful city views, and curious monuments – an Athenian-style temple among them.
