Had lunch here today (Saturday afternoon). The place was empty so we had our choice of tables and the staff were very attentive. Three of us all had sandwiches with either soup or chips. All enjoyed our meals and the price was very reasonable.

Took a while for waiter to show up and as we were only ordering soup and sandwiches we expected a 10/15min wait. After 40 mins I asked the bar staff if there was an issue with the order. She was very pleasant and advised she would chase up order. Another 10 mins later a passable soup and Sandwich appeared without... More

This is a really fine restaurant. Most of the bistros along the Royal mile were packed and we walked one block off the Royal Mile and this place was comparatively empty. The food was excellent and well prepared. The service was also excellent. Their stick toffee pudding is to die for.

We thought we would stop off for tea and cake. The service was soon slow. Teas took about 10 mins they weren't too bad. The cakes took another 15 minutes. The scones were very dry and the Victoria sponge was the worst Ive had in years. It tasted like a tesco value one that had just been defrosted and the... More

The food is over-priced, it take too long to arrive, they were massvely under staffed, I felt because I was ion my own I was being ignored. I waited so long for the bill to come after asking for it I had to go to the bar and get them to ring it up there and then. I was up... More

Poor service, had to ask for menus and ask to order. The waitress clearly didn't have a clue about food or drink offered. We waited 30 mins just to be served and another 30 for the food. When the food finally arrived it was dire, cold fatty congealed bacon in my BLT. Fishcakes that were suspicious and soup that looked... More

Popped in just to grab a sandwich at lunchtime. It was ok but nothing more than that. Ciabatta roll was a bit past its best and the portion of chips for £1 was pretty small. Then again the service was very good and it didn't cost the earth.

Don't be fooled by its smart exterior. When we arrived we asked if they were still serving food as it was late afternoon. They did not understand the question which in retrospect should have made us run for the hills. However we asked for menus and duly ordered. My partner order a starter and we both ordered main courses. Everything... More

I am loath to write poor reviews as I know how difficult it is to please everyone but I wish that I had checked Tripadvisor before entering this establishment. We visited during the Fringe Festival and therefore when our waiter told us of the list of beers that were not available on their menu we were not too upset. We... More

Ordered a salad on one of the hottest days of the year. More mayonnaise than anything else, to the poinbt where the croutons were wet and slimy. Barely any salad leaves at all, a tiny bit of tomato, soggy cucumber and tasteless red onion. All for the bargain price of £9. Horrible, barely edible food. Could have something to do... More

Staying in Old Town

Neighbourhood Profile
Old Town
Few Edinburghers live in the Old Town, but its labyrinth of dank alleys and steep streets suggests this was not always the case. Today, it’s mostly visitors, tartan-flavoured souvenir shops, and pipers that you’ll find on its cobbled streets. This is the place to get a feel for Auld Reekie (Old Smelly), as the town was once nicknamed, and stroll the Royal Mile, the thoroughfare that links the castle with the royal palace – two of Edinburgh’s great set-piece attractions. But there’s lots more exploring to do here down dozens of little alleys, or wynds, while at night the city’s busiest clubs erupt along the Cowgate which is closed to traffic for this purpose.
