We had just arrived in Edinburgh and found the need to get caught up on laundry. (That's just down the street.) Of the restaurant choices in this area of Clerk St. I don't recall why we chose Flip. But, it may have had something to do with a desire for a quick sandwich before exploring Edinburgh. We had just driven... More

This place was recommended by a local, and we're glad we tried it. My large group all tried different items and everyone loved their choices. The coffee shop atmosphere and eclectic international food innovations made it a delightful place to refuel and dodge the rain. FYI: it's not just vegetarian and there are ample meat selections. We will definitely eat... More

The food here was fresh, healthy, and delicious. I ordered the Zeus and loved it! The owner of the restaurant was very hospitable and made sure all of our needs were met. I hope to visit Edinburgh again soon and eat at Flip! again!

Went there today for a bite at lunch. The staff member (could have been the owner) was really nice to my kids and went the extra mile with hospitality. There's very much a "I'll treat you with respect to the level you respect me" feel to the service - which is great. So don't go there if you're a pretentious... More

Staying in Southside & Holyrood

Neighbourhood Profile
Southside & Holyrood
Many of Edinburgh’s student hangouts gather around university buildings in Southside, the sort of neighbourhood that supports a long string of second-hand shops and eateries serving ethnic food for just a few pounds. In August the student population is replaced by vast numbers of boisterous visitors here for the Fringe, Edinburgh’s world-class comedy and arts festival which headquarters itself here. Flanking Southside are two great parks. The Meadows is a vast flat and sporty space where football, rugby, tennis, cricket, croquet, and golf often all take place side by side. Kids in its big playgrounds add to the joyful noise. Far bigger and much wilder, Holyrood Park extends to the east and provides a real hike up Arthur’s Seat, but the district is best known as the site of Scotland’s Parliament and its premier Royal Palace—and their steady stream of sightseers.
