This simple friendly restaurant was able to easily match the food we had while on holiday in Japan The roasted sesame seed ice cream is an absolute must. We thought they were really generous with the portions and the price was great value. We will be back and will encourage others to do the same.

Found this restaurant by chance and so glad we did. Our sushi was presented on a model boat and was absolutely delicious, and the staff couldn't have been more helpful. Would definitely come back next time I'm in Edinburgh.

I was a little nervous eating here as I haven't eaten much Japanese food in the past. I shouldn't have been worried! I had the bento box with pork katsu and it was outstanding! The salad was fresh, the rice perfectly cooked and the meat was tender with crispy crumbed exterior. We were given complimentary miso soup on arrival which... More

I've been to Koyama several times now and all in all I've always been very satisfied. The staff is very friendly and caring. The service is usually quick, with one exception where a friend of mine was waiting for her food a long time whilst the others had theirs for over ten minutes already and had to start eating to... This is very simple spot, but unbelievably good food for good price and very nice staff. The cook is watching through the window if guests are happy and you should see smile on his face when they are! To give you idea I will just say, that I spent in Edinburgh 8 days and I eat there 5 times

Food, service, presentation and atmosphere are impeccable. However, both times I've been there at 8:30 approximately, the restaurant closes doors sooner than It should and despite being comprehensible if not enough customers are showing up, then the schedule should be modified as I was hurried both times to finish up even without being asked for desert or coffee before. No... More

As other reviewers have mentioned, this is not a fancy place for an exotic meal. I think you get more or less what it says on the tin - with our tempura being at the very good end of the scale, and the sukiyaki and sea bass bento box - a bit disappointing. Having said that, the prices are good... More

I've popped in here several times now for a quick lunch. It's not a fancy place but the food is good and it's good value for money. We shared a sushi set and nigiri a perfect light lunch for two. The miso soup is free. The total bill was under £12 for 2 (we drink tap water). Considering many sandwich... More

I have been here in the past, hence decided to come back on Valentine's Day, knowing I would not get disappointed, and I was right once again. Good food, well presented, a nice bonus of free prawn crackers and miso soup, which are served straight away before you communicate your order. The sashimi set was delicious, the squid and the... Staying in Old Town

Neighbourhood Profile
Old Town
Few Edinburghers live in the Old Town, but its labyrinth of dank alleys and steep streets suggests this was not always the case. Today, it’s mostly visitors, tartan-flavoured souvenir shops, and pipers that you’ll find on its cobbled streets. This is the place to get a feel for Auld Reekie (Old Smelly), as the town was once nicknamed, and stroll the Royal Mile, the thoroughfare that links the castle with the royal palace – two of Edinburgh’s great set-piece attractions. But there’s lots more exploring to do here down dozens of little alleys, or wynds, while at night the city’s busiest clubs erupt along the Cowgate which is closed to traffic for this purpose.
