Booked late in the day and the restaurant were able to accomodate us. Main courses were very enjoyable. Desserts a bit disappointing.

My daughter booked this place for myself and my wife before we went to see a show at the playhouse. The seating area isn't very big so may be a bit of a squash if it's sold out but the service was great and the meals were excellent and great value for money. I think the size of the place... More

Went here on Tripadvisor recommendation as it was just round the corner to where we were staying and we were not disappointed. Lovely food and cosy atmosphere. Would have walked passed it if we hadn't read the reviews. Went on a Monday and it was quite busy so maybe would have to book for a weekend. Thoroughly recommend it.

I have visited Asti on numerous occasions with family and friends. We live locally so are always happy to wander up the road for dinner, lunch, or breakfast. The food is always fresh and definitely brings you the flavours of Italy. Polenta chips and suggo are delicious, as is the calamari fritti. Personal favourites are the crab linguini and saltimbocca.... More

Visited recently with 4 friends and we were very well looked after. We were seated in the window seat at the back of the restaurant which was perfect for our party. Service was good and they have an extensive menu choice which is supplemented by a specials board. Nobody had a problem in finding a starter and main course to... More

We have been visiting here for some time and am glad the standards are still very high. The choice of food and wine is good, pre theatre menu, a la carte and the specials board. I had the arnacini as a starter and thought the tomato and pepper sauce was fantastic. The staff were attentive but not intrusive, and the... More

Booked blind from the internet for a group of 7. We were made very welcome end enjoyed delicious fresh cooked dishes including lobster ravioli, sea bream with risotto, swordfish steak and mussels. Limoncello pannacota with plums was a delightful finish to my meal.

We went to the Asti Restaurant at the last day of our Edinburgh trip with five persons. The atmosphere is very nice for a italian diner. We ordered bruschetta and salads to start and were not disappointed. The bruschetta was very big and delicious the salads were tasty as well. For main course we ordered different pastas and risottos. We... More

A group of 6 of us booked for lunch on a Sunday. One of our group is Coeliac and needs to eat Gluten Free and this little restaurant went a big way not to disappoint. The restaurant only seats about 20 max. The staff were very friendly, polite and knowledgeable about GF diet. Every one of us cleared our plates,... More

After reading all positive reviews we were confident that we would get a nice Italian meal. Nothing more wrong! We have travelled through Italy quite a lot and no Italian cook would serve this kind of food. The idea may be to serve Italian but it is strongly compromised with Scottish kitchen.

Staying in Broughton & Calton

Neighbourhood Profile
Broughton & Calton
Lying where grandiose New Town townhouses give way to malls and utilitarian housing, Broughton and Calton have long been transitional neighbourhoods with a mixed identity. It’s here that Edinburgh’s gay village found a home in the 1980s. But gay culture is anything but overt along bustling epicentre Broughton Street; even if polished pubs, hip bistros, smart delis and art galleries all speak of affluent good taste. The top of Leith Walk is more ragged. This major thoroughfare boasts a famously gritty gay club, as well as a strip of good Indian restaurants. Regal Georgian and Victorian townhouses preside over largely deserted streets in Calton, where only the occasional restaurant or hotel brings much life. Even so, a steady trickle of idlers and picnickers pass by to climb Calton Hill for its wide-open lawns, wonderful city views, and curious monuments – an Athenian-style temple among them.
