I have ordered a food for collection, quite bigger amount. They were 30 minutes late to provide it, even though I have mentioned that the time is strict. The food was just average, or slightly below average.

This restaurant used to have a fine reputation. Following our visit we won't be returning. The food was bland and not that hot. The rice was the worst I've ever experienced. Even when we complained the next lot was no better. The young waiter was trying too hard and his older colleague didn't hear us when we made a complaint.... More

Wonderful dining. I moaned and moaned about visiting a vegetarian restaurant but I was not disappointed! Such incredible flavours in a light and relaxed atmosphere. And I hate to admit it but I didn't miss the meat. Would go back in a heartbeat. Worth the short walk from the city centre!

I am so used as a vegetarian and now gluten intolerance diner to having maybe one dish I can eat. I have visited twice this week and have had a different meal each time. The section of starters and main meals is amazing and very tasty. I was a bit disapponted and surprised that they said the coffee pot had... More

First thing first. - Food is not at all spicy - What you ordered will not be upto your expectations (not even close). Especially Galouti Kebab which happens to be a mixture of some bombay chat instead of "Galouti" kebab as it was kept on a layer of sweet murabba. - The portion of each items ordered were very less... We first came as students in the 1980s. Many years later, and no longer living in Edinburgh, we come less often but are never disappointed. The buffet lunch is also great value.

Kalpna is a lovely restaurant based in the student area of Edinburgh. All menu is vegetarian/vegan, which is a plus. We tried the Sahi (?) Sabzi and the Dahl Tarka. Both of them were nice but the Dahl portion was pretty small I thought! Especially because we were recommended to get one portion of rice and one of bread, and... More

Delicious food - the menu included more than just run-of-the-mill indian dishes. I had the 'bateta vada' starter which was delicately flavoured with a spicy (tamarind?) sauce and made a fantastic appetiser. Even if you are full (as I was) the traditional home-made ice-cream is not to be missed. Creamy and rich with a honey flavouring without being sugary-sweet! And... More

I had never been into a vegetarian Indian restaurant and I was a bit sceptic but this actually was a good surprise - all very tasteful, the flavors were perfectly blended together and still very distinguished. Nice service and I actually loved the style of the place - the walls were covered in little mirrors sparkling all around us! Be... More

Staying in Southside & Holyrood

Neighbourhood Profile
Southside & Holyrood
Many of Edinburgh’s student hangouts gather around university buildings in Southside, the sort of neighbourhood that supports a long string of second-hand shops and eateries serving ethnic food for just a few pounds. In August the student population is replaced by vast numbers of boisterous visitors here for the Fringe, Edinburgh’s world-class comedy and arts festival which headquarters itself here. Flanking Southside are two great parks. The Meadows is a vast flat and sporty space where football, rugby, tennis, cricket, croquet, and golf often all take place side by side. Kids in its big playgrounds add to the joyful noise. Far bigger and much wilder, Holyrood Park extends to the east and provides a real hike up Arthur’s Seat, but the district is best known as the site of Scotland’s Parliament and its premier Royal Palace—and their steady stream of sightseers.
