Had the pleasure of having a retirement meal for one of our members of staff along with 13 other members of staff and we could not have had a better time. The set menu £25.00 for 3 courses was just fantastic value and the choice is fantastic too. I challenge anyone anywhere in Edinburgh to get better value and quality... More

The restaurant at the Roxburghe Hotel used to be very smart many years ago. This is sadly no longer the case; it's bland, uninspiring and feels like its part of a big soulless chain. There are many other much better restaurants nearby.

Food was good, especially the breakfasts, which were excellent, but the staff were inexperienced particularly the younger staff. It was a little disappointing that they did not have either of two wines we ordered, and meant that we had to have more expensive ones. No discount offered. The ambience would have been helped by having some music playing in the background.... More

Arrived late in Edinburgh after an 8 hour journey by train. Our booking at the restaurant (in the hotel) was for 7.30 but they were quite happy to delay it for 30 mins whilst we checked in to the hotel and changed. The meal was very good - I had smoked salmon followed by pork medallions whilst my husband had... More

This is located in the Roxburghe hotel. I satyed for almost a week in Roxburghe but did not desire to go to Melrose. The brealfast here was definitely good and so was the coffee.

Ate here as I was staying at the hotel and was pleasantly surprised. They were slightly slow to take my order, however I had the duck which was divine and a small glass of wine - £21. The ambience is neither here nor there and the restaurant is definitely more suited to breakfast as said by the previous reviewer.

We have enjoyed a number of Macdonald hotels restaurants and they have always excelled at local fine ingredients, excellent flavours and perfect service. What a disappointment this was. Plain, uninspiring (at best) decor, a truly disappointing menu (gnocchi, salmon, chicken and 3 types of steak/beef- each at a supplement). The starters were poor and did not match the descriptions, the... More

Staying in New Town

Neighbourhood Profile
New Town
Suits and shopping bags rule the streets of New Town, until after dark when strappy dresses come out to play. This is the city’s central business district with its smaller offices, clothes boutiques, and many of the city’s flashiest restaurants and ritziest clubs. The architecture along roads like George Street helps give it a swank and formal feel: it’s a planned Georgian development of regal townhouses, geometric squares, and self-important statues. But it’s also a very wanderable neighbourhood, with a healthy bustle at almost any time of day and fine people-watching in places like St Andrew's Square which fills with picnickers around lunch. You’ll also find a series of cheerful basement bistros on Hanover Street, while dark Rose Street has something of the feel of an undiscovered back alley and is chock-full of characterful pubs and small independent shops.
