It had been a week since we entered UK and our taste buds wanted a bit of a spice. Chop Chop is situated almost bang opposite the Haymarket Station. It is a pleasant restaurant with friendly staff and basic decor. The food is reasonably priced and is a delight. They use fresh ingredients and everything is made to order. Though... More

This was the most authentic Chinese food we have had in the UK. Having lived in china, this food really took us back to it, gave us the feeling of eating in a local restaurant in china! The only difference between this and our favourite local restaurants in china is the higher quality ingredients!

What a delightful review! Thank you so much. You are right in saying that the ingredients in our food are of a higher quality than in China (in general). Scotland has some of the best meat and vegetables in the world, so the combination of Chinese flavours with Scottish ingredients is unbeatable! More

This place was recommended by our friends,so we decided to try. The food was average and really overpriced. The menu was very limited. The decor was really non existing and the toilets were dirty. There was no paper towel either. The young staff were lovely though. Big disappotment overall.

Thank you for your comments and your compliment regarding the staff, which is much appreciated. Chop Chop is essentially an Asian canteen style establishment, where the emphasis is on the food and the ambiance, not the interior design. We clean the toilets twice daily, so I apologise that you found them wanting. I will review our procedures. Your comment that... More

We hadn't been to Chop Chop in a few years, but the place was pretty much as we remembered it. Edinburgh is quiet in March so no trouble getting a booking at short notice. The idea of Chop Chop is that you don't get "courses" as such. Instead you get lots of small "sharing" courses at random intervals served from... More

Thanks, GasMenace, for your detailed account, which vividly describes your recent visit. Readers will gather that a meal in Chop Chop is a different experience - it's not just about the food but also the way we serve it. It sounds as though you won't be leaving it another few years before you return! We look forward to it! More

Ate here based on Jay Rayner's review last month. We were heading for a gig at Usher Hall and, me being a dumpling hoore and Himself loving Chinese, Chop Chop seemed like a no brainer. Whilst the décor and plastic dishes may not to be to everyone's taste, when you eat at Chop Chop, you should abandon all pretention and... More

Thank you so much for your enthusiastic review and your intention to return. Our extensive menu of unusual dishes (not in the bushtucker trial sense) warrants several forays. You wisely state that it is best to expect a tapas-like experience although the amounts guests order ranges from a snack to a full-on banquet. We look forward to seeing you again... More

Hello, Finlaynisa. I am truly sorry about your experience. Having noticed that you were not receiving your food, I investigated and discovered that your order had been misplaced at the bar and had not reached the kitchen. I then instructed the kitchen to make your order urgently but by that time you had decided to leave. It is not our... More

We came to this restaurant on the back of the recent review in the Guardian and we were certainly not disappointed. Our waitress was charming, helpful and courteous, the owner was attentive and the price was certainly reasonable. We tried both the boiled and fried dumplings, along with the cucumber salad and shredded potatoes. Yes, the plates were plastic and... More

This place has delicious food and many options for vegetarians! We ordered both the steamed and fried veggie dumplings, green beans, and a spicy tofu dish and everything exceeded our expectations.

Staying in West End

Neighbourhood Profile
West End
Prevailing winds meant that most cities that grew in industrial Britain had their most desirable neighbourhoods to the west – upwind of factory fumes. Edinburgh was no exception, with its wealthiest citizens settling in its West End and leaving behind grand Georgian townhouses, private gardens and genteel crescents. These backstreets remain as dignified and sleepy as ever, and most of the action here lies along the district’s busy main roads. Lothian Road connects to southern Edinburgh and harbors a vague entertainment district: three theatres and the city’s main indie cinema. All attract a select crowd, the sort who appreciate the Saturday Edinburgh’s Farmers’ Market around the corner. The West End’s other great thoroughfare, Shandwick Place, is dominated by trams trundling out to the suburbs and airport, and shoppers picking up last-minute items before hopping aboard.
