Now open in our new location & fully refurbished! Haar is a relaxed fine dining restaurant focusing on local and seasonal produce. Chef Dean Banks of Masterchef The Professionals fame brought his flagship restaurant to St Andrews in Spring 2019. We went to try out Haar at lunchtime to take advantage of the lunch value menu. Whilst the portions were small, and the sides were extra we were not disappointed as we really did feel we got a real taste of Dean Banks style of cooking as all the set menu items were from the a la carte menu. The Asian fusion with great perfectly cooked Scottish produce brought alive roasted cauliflower and pork belly for the first course and a delicious, but mild Goan curry with trout and a delicious beef dish. The smashed roast potatoes cooked in seaweed were exceptional, great texture and taste and a generous portion, two dishes were enough with the bread to fill out the relatively small dishes. For my taste the Mizo in the butter to accompany the hot freshly baked corn bread (another extra) was a bit too salty and strong, an option to have the local butter without the Mizo would I feel be welcomed by some clients. The deserts were of a high quality but perhaps not yet Haar’s forte. The service was friendly and efficient and the atmosphere light and in keeping with its location looking onto the Main Street of St Andrews. However, as noted by other reviewers the automatic door demanded by the host hotel for its clients brings icy blasts of air into the restaurant- surely with continued negative feedback on this attributable to the hotels demands will change the hotels attitude on this important matter, if not the name of the restaurant will truly be spot on in the winter months. We will definitely be returning to check out the tasting menu.

Dear Paul D, Thank you for your 5* review! It is great to hear you enjoyed the food during your experience at Haar. We are looking into ways to solve the automatic door issue but you are correct in saying the mater is down to the hotel and we have very little say in the mater. I do hope we can come up with a resolution in the near future. I look forward to welcoming you again in the near future many thanks, Ruairi General Manager

This restaurant was always going to be interesting to eat in because it is owned by a Masterchef finalist, and we have all been intrigued by that programme. Perhaps this is a disadvantage: one expects perfection but may not necessarily get it. The evening started on a rocky note when we were ushered to the bar for an aperitif and to browse the menu only to be led away almost as soon as our drinks arrived, and as soon as we had chosen our food. This had me carrying a large glass of (delicious) gin, half a bottle of tonic water, my coat, a hat, gloves and a bag all together to the table, and, in so doing, performing a balancing act. As soon as we sat at our table the wine was brought along with the first course, leaving me to drink the as-yet practically untouched gin, the wine and also eat that first course simultaneously. I felt rushed. The bar is very small so I can understand why the staff wanted to move us onwards, nevertheless customers should be granted more time for enjoying one’s aperitif at those prices. The food did not disappoint in the main, but there were some parts which could perhaps be improved. The arrival of my third course was accompanied by a chef’s detailed explanation about the dehydrated tomato powder which covered a piece of gurnard. The dehydration caused an intense tomato flavour, he said. As a person who adores tomatoes I was delighted, but, hand on heart, I must say that I could not actually taste any tomato at all, and experienced only an intense saltiness. Indeed the saltiness later caused an extreme thirst despite the water which I had been careful to drink. The orange desert was quite delicious, but was accompanied by a sort of hard gelatinous orange tuille which stuck annoyingly to my teeth as I tried to remove it surreptitiously at table, and proved very difficult to get rid of. All in all, however, I did enjoy the meal and would return to the restaurant despite my criticism of these points.

We ordered the crab and lobster box from Haar which offered delivery to Glasgow. The value of the box is immense and looking at the pictures I couldn't beleive how much we were getting for the money. I can't commend the guys enough on their quick responses, customer service and the delivery, but the best bit was definitely the food. Easy to follow instructions, well packaged and prepared! Aside from the lobster and crab themselves being really well presented and tasting great, the pairing of their own smoked mayonnaise and the Mirin butter sauce are the difference and made it one of the best shellfish dishes I've had and eat seafood a lot. I couldn't fault any of it and the sides (seaweed potatoes / Asian salad) were excellent accompaniments. This made our day during lockdown and what was a birthday dinner for my better half a great treat. We can't wait until normality resumes and we can get up to St. Andrews to enjoy more of their offerings! Can't recommend enough!

We opted for the 5 course tasting menu with the addition of lobster. We asked the price and were told 30 for a lobster so was very surprised when we were charged 30 each for half a lobster. Beef cheek was good and mango sorbet at end was only other highlight. Lobster meant to be the highlight but sadly dull and very soft..almost mushy which was not enjoyable. Last time we had similar was at Andrew Fairlies which came with smoking theatre and Haars was very lacking. We were sitting next to a wall which had stains and dirty marks so even before we tasted food I was a little disappointed. Dhugal our waiter was very attentive and chatty so thank you to him. Chicken course was sent back as my wife felt here chicken was undercooked. We were given another but it came back without the rub that imitated a crispy skin. When we questioned the chicken we were asked if we knew it was corn fed chicken which I felt was very condescending due to the fact that my chicken and her one was totally different which is why we knew there was a problem although we were told came from same breast. We were looking forward to it and sadly for the cost and the few issues we had we left with the knowledge that we would not be recommending this to others. None of the food gave us a food sensory experience as described..just sad that the highlight was a small tea spoon of mango sorbet. Sorry Dean Banks.

After previously eating in Haar Restaurant, and buying multiple boxes of Haar at Home through out lockdown to support the company - I was left in tears this evening, after being accused of being a ‘Karen’ for voicing my disappointment. We purchased the Land and Sea ‘Luxury’ Box today and purchased an additional half lobster. When opening up the lobster bag which had also been crammed with the crab - the lobster was so badly squashed it was inedible. I took pictures and called and left a voicemail and sent a private message to Haar Restaurant on Instagram, asking them to call me as I was disappointed to receive what we did - I also mentioned this is not something we have received previously and hoped this wasn’t a sign of things to come. No phonecall was made to me, yet a reply instantly popped up stating that it was now a requirement to vacuum pack. Surely you would vacuum pack the actual lobster or not place one on top to ensure the pressure didn’t squash the meat, yet this is not what happened. No offer to rectify or apology for the receipt of the inedible food. I informed them that this needed to be posted so that people understood what £120 meal should be like and was met with a sexist, derogatory response of ‘Goodnight Karen’ and blocked. I am still in shock as to what happened this evening. As we have purchased several times before, I was expecting a response of apology and that the third shellfish shouldn’t have been put on top, but this is not what happened at all. What could have been a quick phonecall and apology, escalated and I am appalled that after supporting throughout COVID, this is the response I received. I also mentioned my friend has purchased the night before for her 10 year Wedding Anniversary (I had recommended to her whole family and her mother and father had previously purchased) and they had forgotten a side. Things like this may not be a big deal to Haar Restaurant. Yet as soon as they pleaded vulnerability on Social Media in these uncertain times and put a call out to support them, the first thing we did was purchase a box and then several more after. Such a disappointing experience and to get personal abuse and block me with the last word being a sexist comment on ‘Karen’s’ is truly appalling.

We had Haar at home, land and sea box + champagne for Father’s Day. We have tried a few restaurant at home experiences now but this was by the far the best. The ingredients were of a great quality and the food tasted exceptional. I think the fact that each course only has 2 items works really well. We had a really enjoyable afternoon spreading all 3 courses over a few hours. I was extremely impressed by the rib eye. The champagne was also priced well I felt - I looked online to compare prices and the Haar is actually cheaper than direct delivery from wine merchants, which was good to see! Great service and well packaged and chilled. Would highly recommend for a special experience. I was hoping to bring forward my birthday from December so I have an excuse to do it again!

I now understand all of the cheers and grunts Greg used to give Dean on Masterchef - they aren’t just put on for tv! Really glad I visited tonight, had the expectations of enjoying a few dishes but could honestly say was blown away by the taste of all of my courses. Will be back ASAP! Catered for my gluten free partner with homemade bread and tweaks to the menu with no impact on taste or experience. Very cosy restaurant with a relaxed atmosphere - a must visit if in the area and you appreciate fine dining that packs a punch!

We stayed in St Andrews on Thursday and Friday of last week, and had received a voucher to use at Haar. Booking was easy and done via email contact with the restaurant well in advance. On arrival at the restaurant we were welcomed and seated immediately, and staff ran through the menu. We had already decided to go for the tasting menu, which for that week was Spanish themed, relating to where Chef Dean Banks had been on his culinary travels. The tasting menu was 5 courses and I opted to take the two optional courses and my other half one of the optional courses. All of the meal was excellent, brought to the table by knowledgeable and engaging staff at a good tempo. Whilst all courses were exceptional the undoubted star was the lobster (one of the optional courses) which the Chef cooked on a recent appearance on Masterchef. We had selected the matching wine package and all wines paired exceedingly well with each course, with an added nice touch of staff always asking for feedback and thoughts on pairings. The restaurant also has a small bar attached, which stocked a wide range of drinks again with knowledgeable and attentive staff serving. Whilst Haar does not have a Michelin star yet, in time it will undoubtedly receive one as this is on a par with others we have eaten at. We asked to keep the menu and the Chef kindly signed them for us - a nice memento.

We used an Itison voucher for the 5 course tasting menu, came away underwhelmed & hungry. Ox cheek very salty, pork fillet tiny & overcooked & pak choi with pork very salty. There was also little or no carbs. There are two supplementary course but no price adverts & waiting staff never provided this information.

For my birthday, my wife decided to get one of the itison vouchers for a meal at The Haar after hearing phenomenal things about it. We were some of the first customers in this evening so the atmosphere was slightly quieter, however when others came in and speed picked up, it was great watching the place jump to life. Warmly greeted by our fantastic host, Sean and told about the menus, o favourite was the ox cheek, and my wife, she enjoyed the incredible fish course. The wines though...that really made it something as special. Near the end of the meal, we looked towards getting coffees, but were lead to the bar to sit and enjoy some great desert cocktails. For both of us however, we do feel that the thing that set The Haar apart from any other place of this quality, was the way it could make us relax, and not have to meet expectation. My wife and i spoke at length and were told incredible stories with our hillarious host Doogal, who with a real natural talent, took the time to show us a real passion and genuineness to our experience, something we can say we havent ever experienced before. When we got home, we spoke about the experience for a long time reminicing on the warm welcome from Sean, the welcome drinks, the oyster, the ox, the wine, the service from Doogal, the cocktails, the ambience, EVERYTHING. It was an experience we will remember for a long time, and huge congratulations to Dean for opening such a restaurant and building a fantastic team who are a credit to your buissiness. Thank you Sean, Doogal and Dean. F + J

We ordered the fresh lobster and crab box for home delivery after spotting an advert and rave reviews on Facebook. What a fabulous idea during lockdown. We’ve been enjoying restaurant quality food and drink from many of our favourite haunts over the past 14 weeks but we’d never heard of Haar. What a find. The whole meal was utterly delicious. To have such amazing Scottish seafood and produce delivered to our own kitchen was a delight. We’ll be ordering the surf and turf soon and so hope that, despite reopening, Haar and our other favs will keep delivering too. We also purchased a voucher for our friend’s 60th after she admired my FB photos of our dinner.

On holiday in the beautiful East Neuk of Fife, 4 of us visited Haar on Sunday 23 Feb, lunch, 5 course Thai tasting menu and we also opted for the additional lobster and scallop courses along with the 7 course wine pairing.........just absolutely stunning! Service was top notch, didn’t miss a beat! Every single course was excellent, hard to choose favourites but the lobster, scallop and pollock dishes stood out with the signature lobster the star of the show! That mirin butter! Inspirational! There was not a scrap left on the shell! Wine was perfectly matched, truly delicious and definitely enhanced each course if that was possible! Relaxed ambience, cool decor, absolutely no rush and lovely, comfortable surroundings, an exceptional experience and surely cannot be too long before that first star arrives! Yes, it’s expensive, but true value for money..........you really do get what you pay for! We cannot wait to return, and although Dean was there, we didn’t get to meet him but would love to shake his hand next time and let him know what a truly exceptional dining experience his restaurant offers!

This a just a fantastic wee restaurant in the town of St Andrews. Modern Scottish cooking at its very best. You can opt for a 5/7course tasting menu or al a carte. The tasting menu changes frequently so I would check with the restaurant if you have any dietary issues. I had tandoori cauliflower which was absolutely delicious and followed this with half a lobster drenched in mirin butter. There was only a couple of side options ( the only weak point of the al a carte menu) and we had a portion of pak choi topped with popcorn. Hubby had ox cheek to start and then a pork dish that must have been good because there was not a chance of sharing! We did however share a tarte tatin which was fab. Wine list is relatively short but some really interesting options. We had a really lovely St Emillion , priced well. The young chef is charming and we spoke to him briefly on leaving. He plans to open in our home city, Edinburgh, sometime in May. We cannot wait!

We had a meal box delivery from Haar and were really looking forward to it, and as a treat I ordered the dressed crab, which at £14 was hardly cheap. It was disgraceful, completely stuffed full of crab shell and with no dressing or sauce -- see the photo. This completely put us off the meal. Also the meal arrived with no cooking instructions which we had to source online. I wouldn't order from them again as if they can't quality control a simple starter how can you trust them for a main course?

We had the crab and lobster dinner for 2 this evening. The food arrived very well presented; with detailed instructions for heating and serving. We cannot praise the service enough - timely delivery and careful attention to hygiene. The crab and asian salad starter was first rate, with warm corn bread and smoked mayo; this was followed by lobster and mirrin butter, with asparagus and new potatoes. This is top quality restaurant standard food at a very fair price. Dean Banks deserves to succeed!
