Sept 2020 friends
First visited on 25th Sept. Had a wee drink and some food. My friend had the toasted cheese and ham sandwich, I had the brie and cranberry sandwich and roasted tomato soup combo. My husband had the 5 bean chilli nachos.. The portions were generous and the drinks were ok too. The 2nd time we visited was a pleasant Sunday afternoon and it was really busy so we sat in the marquee on the road. My friend and I shared a nice New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc + my husband had a nice Innis + Gunn lager. It was approaching dinnertime so my friend Joan enjoyed the all day pancakes with bacon and syrup, and I had the toasted brie, bacon and cranberry panini and my husband had the "Cri" pie of chicken, chorizo, sundried tomato. My husband said it was a lovely pie but couldn't find the chorizo in it... Anyway loved the service, loved the Covid measures and it's a lovely pub all in all.

We have popped by the pub a few times over the past few months. It is located near the end of South Street closer to the cathedral. Last time we went there, we had Steak and ale pie and chicken and chorizo pie were both delicious. We also had nacho another time which was also nice. The food can take a little while to arrive at busy times, but as the staff explained the kitchen is tiny so it is inevitable at times. This wasn’t a problem for us though, as we were not in a hurry. There is a good selection of ales and beers to choose from, which my OH liked. The pub itself isn’t that big, but it has a nice traditional feel about the place and the staff are very friendly. If you have kids and a dog, then you’d need to sit in the outside area, but if you just just have a dog, you can go inside with your dog and they make her very welcome. Staff came to greet our spaniel and brought for a bowl of water and some treats, which was very kind. I can imagine it will now become very difficult to go out for a walk with her passing The Criterion without going in, is she know how lovely it is to go in there!

Our go to place whenever we are over in St Andrews. What a perfect way to end lockdown and enjoy our first drink indoors. The staff are all really friendly, they are taking appropriate measures against Covid including, track & trace, table service only, masks, reasonable spacing between tables etc – felt very safe Great selection of beers/real ales/gin/wine. Food is very good too – we opted for the toasted sandwich and wow it was fantastic, served with a lovely side salad and some nacho chips. - great value for money. Never anything to fault. We will be back soon

We liked the atmosphere whilst waiting for our food and the bar staff were very friendly. However, we were quite disappointed once the food arrived. My husband had a few mouthfuls of the haggis and tried to eat only the chips but even they were tainted by the awful taste. He left most of the meal as it was so awful and took ill almost immediately with sickness and a bad stomach. I had a few of the chips and could taste the awful haggis from them. It’s not that we dislike haggis as we do normally eat and enjoy haggis but this was just far too strong. It makes me sad to think that tourists trying haggis for the first time will think that is what haggis tastes like. I had the steak and ale pie and was quite disappointed with the amount of gravy with nothing to soak it up with (hence me pinching some chips). There was very little meat and the gravy was far too salty. However, this would not have put me off coming back and trying something else. My husband becoming ill unfortunately will stop us from returning. We were surprised that we were not asked how our food was at the end since most of my husband’s was left and felt this was poor customer service.

Hi Fionab I was so disappointed to read your review. I am sorry you felt you had to create a trip advisor account to leave a 1 star review rather than tell us you were unhappy at the time and giving us the opportunity to rectify the situation ensuring you left happy. We do a check back on every table and also again ensure everything has been ok when you pay the bill. I have messaged you personally to check exactly when you visited but have had no response. I can only assume it was within the week you left this review. In the 5 days prior to your review we served an average of 46 steak pies each day without any negative feedback. That dish is our best seller on our menu so sorry to hear you did not enjoy it. Your husband appears to have had our Scottish filthy fries. Haggis alone over the same period we sold 39 portions within various dishes. Again no complaints. To insinuate the haggis made your husband immediately ill when you also say he never ate hardly any of the meal has me very confused. Again had you spoken to us at the time we would have gladly changed your dishes to something more appealing to you. I truly hope anyone reading our reviews will see as a small family business we pride ourselves in excellent customer service and fresh home cooked food. I am sorry your husband was unwell but I do not accept your claims that it was down to a dish we served to many other customers that day that again you say your husband did not actually eat. Kind regards Hazel

If you want to wait a long time for a tasteless soup, or a small portion at a high price, this place is for you. The service was very nice and friendly, but the food and prices aren't impressive. The biggest problem, however, is the tiny, cramped toilet. Not only does the toilet seat not fit, it is also dirty (there is a cobweb in the corner), and the cabin is so small that it is even difficult to close the door (and it would be enough for the door to open outwards) . Next time we visit the area, we will definitely choose a different place to eat.

Hi Monica Thank you for your review. Pleased to hear you enjoyed the service. As we check back with every table once food has been served can I ask if you gave us the opportunity to change your soup to something more to your taste? Very little we can do if you wait until you are behind a keyboard to let us know of any complaints. The overwhelming feedback we get is that our portions are perhaps too big so I apologise you were not satisfied. As a small pub I agree yes the toilets are small, there is absolutely nothing we can do to alter the size of the building so we feel we make the best use of the space we have and have had many comments from people who love the layout. I do not agree they are “dirty”, we have a excellent cleaning company that spend 2 hours each day cleaning the entire bar and toilets. I do apologise if they missed 1 cobweb, I don’t feel this facilitates a 1 star review for cleanliness. Thanks for your visit I am sure next time you will find somewhere more to your liking to visit.

Just spent the weekend in St Andrews with friends. Spent all day Sunday in the criterion on South Street. Arrived at 10am and sat outside for breakfast rolls, coffee and alcohol. The owner (Hazel) then gave us seating inside and we spent the whole day there The bar was extremely busy serving food and drinkbut the staff made sure our glasses were never empty. Staff were all very friendly and the young girl on her own in the kitchen was amazing. We watched as she prepared Sundays fresh batch of the famous Cri-Pie so we finished off the afternoon by sharing 3 of the steak &ale pies between the six of us. During our next visit to St Andrews we shall definitely return to the criterion where we shall sample the chicken & chorizo Cri-Pie and maybe some alcohol haha. Big thank you to the owners and staff for making our visit that little bit more special. Regards, Mike & Susan c/o The Black Abbot, Montrose

We hope to come and return the favour and visit you soon at The Black Abbot. With your personality I am sure we will get as warm a welcome as I hope you enjoyed with us. Can’t wait to welcome you back to the cri. From taking your first order at 10am I knew we were going to have fun! Special mention from Jenna the young girl in the kitchen who is 25 and thinks she is getting old but over the moon you described her as young 😂 Kind regards Hazel

Visited on a few occasions during our visit to St Andrews, Lucky enough to be able to sit outside in the sunshine. Itsa very busy popular place, great for people watching. Very friendly welcoming staff, hand sanatising before entry, track n trace in operation , all tables/chairs sanatised before being seated. We enjoyed our beers outside, great friendly atmosphere, all servers are luvly. We shared a chicken bacon cheese ciabatta, freshly prepared and very tasty. A very good menu on offer. We will be back on our next visit. :) :)

We visited the UK and I would have to say that this was the best food we had on our entire trip, which included St. Andrews, Edinburgh, and London. The chicken chorizo Cri-Pie was the absolute best! The atmosphere was great and our server was very attentive and a lot of fun. I would absolutely eat here again!

We arrived not realising it was 4 maximum to a table so there was 5 of us. We were happy to split between 2 tables. The only issue was one of the tables was right by the door. The staff were apologetic about this and made such a big effort to turn on all the heaters and point them at us. We didn't realise the kitchen only served pies later in the night but the waitress was apologetic and lovely about this and the pies were yummy anyway! Worth a visit for the nice staff, food and drinks! Thanks guys!

Hello NakitaKaur Thank you for your review. I am glad our team clearly went out their way to accommodate your party size even though due to level 3 restrictions on social distancing we do not have a table that accommodates a party of 5. Sadly our door has to be kept open in order to provide adequate ventilation and keep people safe. My apologies that we do not offer a late dinner service. As we are a pub not a restaurant the majority of our dining trade is at lunchtime and it is not cost effective at this time for us to have a chef on in the evening. I am delighted you enjoyed our best selling Cri Pie which we do serve until closing time ensuring nobody leaves hungry. Not sure we have ever been called “generic” before. We are a small family run business. Our booths are adorned with a tartan we created and patented, our bar itself dates back to 1870 and many of the original features we have lovingly restored and enhanced. Our walls are filled with stunning photography of St Andrews throughout the lifetime of the bar. We take absolute pride and work very hard to ensure we are anything but generic so feel very sad that you felt that way. As recent winners of several awards including “Best Pub In Scotland” awarded to us by the Scottish Hospitality Group I hope we are doing something right. Regards Hazel

Braw wee Pub We were left when all our party departed back to the Cities. Big family get together just before the Open here in St Andrews, fantastic weekend was had by all. Four of us were left on the Sunday night. A few bevvies and a fish supper was on the cards until we visited The Criterion that is. It was busy, but Fraser our friendly barman found us a table. It was good, the beer, the ambience, the decor and the staff made it for us. To cut a long story short, the Chippy tea went by the wayside and Fraser Encouraged us to try the various pies that was on offer. Steak, chicken and also a pasta, all full of goodness with lots of gravy, tatties and veg. We were not disappointed. I thoroughly recommend this pub and the friendly barman who extended our stay with his fun and brilliant salesmanship.

Visited with my Mum for a quick lunch. Food was lovely, very tasty and plentiful. Wait for food not long at all taking into account that it was busy. Offer of water with lemon was appreciated prior to the arrival of the food, as it was a warmish day. The chap who attended to us was lovely and attentive to the needs of my Mum; he is certainly an asset to your establishment. Sorry, unaware of his name, longish hair tied back and a beard, working 28th August? Our experience was enchaned by our interactions with him. Would certainly recommend and will hopefully be able to visit again soon.

If I could give 6 stars out of 5 I would. The Criterion staff are note worthy. I was in St Andrews for a week and this place was easily (and by some distance) the best the town has. Service is very attentive but friendly Food is excellent and tasty Drinks are superb as well, the 80 shilling is amazing. The wine is served at the perfect temperature. Every visit during that week we had the same experience- even our dog Albert loved it because staff made a fuss of him and he got treats Perfect experience.

I come here regularly for the cozy atmosphere, the Cri-Pies, and the unparalleled playlist. The staff is always friendly, the pub is always warm, the Wi-Fi is free and good, and in the cold months they even set up a nice tent with fairy-lights around the outdoor seating area. I would recommend the butternut squash pie (large portions, very filling) and the bramble.

Another fantastic visit to this lovely bar. We had our children so sat outside in tented area so cosy under the heaters though we were lucky anyway with a gorgeous sunny day. Great kids menu and again they were spoiled with sweets and lollies by the staff. Really very friendly staff and the food yet again was delicious. I had the haggis nachos which would have fed all 4 of us. My husband had the macaroni pie with haggis, he loved it. The staff even remembered us from our last visit which we did not expect seeing how busy they are. Kids each had a “luxury” hot chocolate. It arrived covered with marshmallows and cream and chocolate with mini chocolate eggs on the plate. Kids thought they were in heaven! Great place we will be back

A pub with history and remaining pretty traditional inside. Great old photos too of St Andrews but the pies! There is no point in rabbiting on or trying to spin out this narrative - the pies are simply fab! To be fair the pub, the staff and the beers are better than good too. Thank you for a most enjoyable evening.
