Came here on our last night at Avignon as a treat. The service was amazing, but perhaps my expectations were too high, because I was underwhelmed by the food. We got the set menu and while the food was tasty, it was not very exciting or particularly memorable -- it was good, not great. I thought everything was fine, but... More

The owners are the chef and his wife. Very elegant food. If you think chicken is boring, you have never been to this place. The menu changes every week, and my wife and I were so tempted to go back to this restaurant 2 days later to see what new things they had. (It didn't happen, but my sister mom... More

The food was outstanding, the service attentive, the wine list well priced, the owner was present and friendly. The restaurant was filled with a combination of locals and tourists. We will definitely return and highly recommend

We were a largish group, the restaurant was full but the service was excellent and friendly. The food is delicious, they use seasonal foods so lovely chestnut soup with accompaniments that made it special. The main dish was also put together with imagination to bring out the best flavours. Good wines. We will definitely return when next in Avignon.

It was the second time I went to this restaurant and this time again I was very satisfied. The restaurant is clean , well decorated, the servers are friendly and efficient . The food is absolutely excellent , "le foie gras" homemade is very good... We chosen wine of the country " Côte du Rhône " a good choice.

I'm writing this because L'Essentiel is clearly the obvious top choice in Avignon. I've been dropping into Avignon for the past twenty five years and for the life of me I don't know why I haven't discovered this before. It's unlikely I'll want to go anywhere else in the future. Fantastic! The beauty of TripAdvisor, we can still discover great... More

We ate here after our other two choices were unavailable. The service was excellent and most of the entrees were very nice albeit tapas sized portions. However the menu itself was strictly limited to chicken and fish packaged for the ease of preparation and service. The wine list was again only limited to opulent choices -- this is Provence where... This restaurant came highly recommended. But we were disappointed. It certainly did not live up to its hype. I had the Tomato Gazpacho with Mozzerella and Basil. It tasted mostly of viniagry tomato although there was a sprig of basil you couldn't taste it in the soup and the mozzarella balls were totally overwhelmed by the soup. My husband had... More

Genuine family run restaurant with excellent food. We were very please with each course. Tried the Pigeon as this is something I have never had and definitely would not get at home. Excellent. Desert was outstanding.

We managed to get a booking at the last minute on a weeknight but once we got there we were obviously very lucky because the place was full. The owner went out of her way to fit us in just before the kitchen theoretically closed, so much so that she was genuinely unhappy about having to ask us to wait... More
