Dating from 1621 and the oldest restaurant in Berlin, this wonderful German spot and beer garden hits all the items on a Berliner food, wish list. Clad with wood paneling and original tiles, this authentic Berlin cuisine and beer garden has been a favorite of my German family for many, many years. My favorite ordered on each visit is the... We pre-booked our table and were swiftly shown up the pretty spiral staircase to the first floor. The place was already jumping at 7.30pm, so we knew we were on to a winner. We were not disappointed. I had the grilled pork knuckle with mounds of fluffy mash and red cabbage - truly excellent. This is simple food at reasonable... More

Stumbled across this place by accident whilst wandering around Berlin. Turns out it was a happy accident as we enjoyed a very good experience. The staff were friendly and the food was very tasty. My father had the homemade fish fingers which were very tasty - although the accompanying sides were a bit of a mismatch I had the meatball... More

We were very lucky to get a table on a busy evening and were very pleased with the great traditional German food and great service. Despite the restaurant being very busy, the waitress was very attentive and we really appreciated the welcoming and friendly atmosphere in the restaurant. Luiz was especially kind. Highly recommended.

Although the food was extremely good, reiterating the good, the service i did not like. They took a long time to take our order and seated us with two strangers even though we had a reservation. Either way the knuckle of pork and apple pie were outstanding!

I've been eating at this restaurant every time I visit Berlin. Its easy to find on the east side of the bottom of Museum island and within a few minutes walking distance of the Klosterstraße UBahn station on the U2 line. Take the exit for Klosterstraße and then keeping the Fernsehturm TV tower behind you walk towards the large church... More

Warmly greeted and shown to our booked table upstairs. Waiter with character and a great sense of humour. We (8 of us) had a real mix of the menu with Ham Hock, Meatballs, Calves Liver and stuffed cabbage. All well cooked. Wine and beer to suit all tastes. The chef even prepared a birthday (cake) apple strudel with a candle... More

This restaurant has an interesting history as the oldest restaurant in Berlin. The atmosphere and interior is very nice, service is good and the food is what can be expected given the price level. Overall: definitely worth a visit!

Description
Napoleon is believed to have once dined at this restaurant, which opened in 1621.

In 1621, a retired knight’s servant of the elector of that time opened a little distillery, and by this he laid the foundations for “Letzte Instanz”. Thanks to the “Graues Kloster” (Grey Monastery), in Waisenstraße, belonging to Nikolaikirche, the distillery was getting more and more popular even beyond the borderlines of the city. The monastery, working place of doctors, alchemists, and astrologists, and which also had a printing work and a foundry of letters, enhanced the popularity of Waisenstraße and attracted a large number of guests coming to our restaurant.

Staying in Mitte

Neighbourhood Profile
Mitte
The centre of Berlin, Mitte is most famous for sights like the Brandenburg Gate, Alexanderplatz, and Museum Island. The central location makes this one of the city's most expensive places to live. It is here the oldest traces of the city can be found, and evidence of some significant transformations, as well. The gangsters that once ruled the impoverished streets between Alexanderplatz and Hackescher Markt have given way to an international crowd pursuing fashionable designer clothes, the newest food trends and frequenting the many craft shops. Graphic designers have taken up residence in what used to be backyard barns and stables. There are still vestiges of the old days, however. The occasional housing complex is a reminder of the neighbourhood’s past. And if you look carefully, an old 1920s ball house nestled amongst the art galleries and exhibitions of Auguststrasse can still teach you how to dance the old fashioned way.
