Was in Bilbao for a music conference and was looking for some monk fish (called "rape" in Spain) before I left and I walked into this place as I had walked by it during the day. Right from the start, the person who greeted me was friendly. I ordered my meal and had a great plate of fish, an appetizer... More

Expert preparation and presentation with attentive service and a nice wine list. Opens at 8pm, an hour earlier than most upscale restaurants in Bilbao. Turbot was wonderful and perfectly cooked.

the decor of this little gem belies the quality of the food and service. we were attracted by the fresh fish and variety of mushrooms in the window. we ordered fresh grilled gambas, fresh sautéed mushrooms, stewed mushrooms with langoustines and delicious tiramisu for dessert. the service is attentive and menus are in Spanish, English and French. we drank the... The food was very good, and the attendance very polite, although it was not a busy day. The atmosphere was much better than average in other restaurants in that neighbourhood. And price is not a problem, as it's very reasonable. We did not try the sea food, but we could see it alive in the main entrance.

Sea food not fresh, same for the wine. The fish was poorly cooked, nothing special, no real taste. This restaurant is worse than a breakfast chais restaurant.

Good position of the restaurant with an interesant look (they have an aquarium with living lobster swimming in it). The owner was served us and we have to admit that was an excellent serving. Good wines and tasty food (you can ask even things out of the menu) that determined you to come back once more. I strongly recomend it.

We sat in the restaurant, a bit further away from the bar. There was just one other couple around 10 pm, maybe a bit too early still. The food was excellent. The fresh lobster was one of the best I have ever had in a restaurant. A bit pricy but certainly worth it. My wife took the turbot which was... More

We have ordered seabass and turbot. Seabass was exceptionally good, but unfortunally turbot was mediocre. We have also eaten Jamon, which was good, as usual around that area. The waitress was very nice

I travel mostly to Spain and France two or three times per month, and I have been to Maider three times in the last two years. It's authentic and humble. The owner is an excellent waiter who cares about his customers and is passionate about what he serves (for some 30 years, I think!). His red wine recommendations are also... More

We chose Maider as it was close to our hotel and had some good reviews. Our shared starters were excellent - superb Iberican ham and griddled fresh anchovies - together with a delightful crisp white Rioja and a friendly waiter, we were set up to enjoy the evening. But our main course of bacalao al pil-pil was a huge disappointment.... More
