FORN is situated in an old finca dating back to the 19th century, which still retains part of its original structure, revealing its history as a bakery from that period. After arriving in Palma, our fist Dinner was at Forn de Sant Joan. We followed the advice of a good friend. What should I say? - That was a really good advice, the service was perfect and professional, the offering sounds very interesting, the food itself fanstastic.The oysters and the foi were as good as the "noodles" and all of the other good things we had - We recommend to make a reservation and enjoy a great evening. We'll come back, for sure.

Friday Night Dinner - Palma de Mallorca

The restaurant was still nice and busy when we arrived for our 10:30pm reservation. A cheerful and friendly greeting from the Maitre d’ and their staff allowed plenty of time for us to look and discuss the menu without pressure of being hurried through. It is a modern, contemporary style restaurant with traditional features, which matched their style of food perfectly. Eye catching flavour combinations and thoughtfully presented dishes were enjoyed by all! In addition, having day tripped into Palma earlier in the week, the atmosphere and sights are far more enjoyable at night time! Highly recommend eating at Forn de Sant Joan’s.

We stumbled across Forn De Sant Joan when wandering around the city looking for a place to have dinner. On first impressions, it was tastefully decorated with a modern interior and is notably well presented. We tried three different cocktails, all as good as the next.. We had three courses, all of which where excellent. We high recommend the tapas burger and patatas bravas. For desert we chose the creme brûlée strawberries and chocolate mousse and would urge anyone with a sweet tooth to order the mousse! The staff were very attentive and the service was prompt without feeling rushed. Would definitely recommend a visit!

Not worth the price

This place gets busy so you do need to book. The restaurant is very pretty inside and has some interesting art. The waitress asked if we wanted some bread which we presumed would be complimentary in an establishment such as this but no we were charged for it. My starter was wrong when it arrived which she tried to blame me for (it was actually her mistake) so when she took it away she was quite hostile. My husband ordered the steak and for what he paid the portion was pretty meagre and he had literally 4 cubes of sweet potato on the side. I ordered the ravioli and I got 4 pieces. It was not a cheap meal and although the food was good it was not outstanding and drinks were also pricey.

Waste of time

Don’t be fooled by the appearance of a full restaurant, the snooty staff expect “put up and shut up” behaviour from its guests. If you dare to question the dish graced upon you, it’ll be swiftly taken away and you’ll be given the bill before being muffled out of the door. We ordered tapas to start. Arrived barely warm but given the hush hush atmosphere, we decided to hope for better fortunes for the main and kept quiet for the sake of a pleasant evening. Passable flavour. Forgettable. Then came the 40 minute wait for two bowls of lukewarm pasta. We even asked about them half an hour into the wait, to be told they’re coming. The dishes were probably already sat waiting to be served. Disorganised or understaffed? I’ll let management figure that out. In summary, we could’ve been the easiest bill they got, instead they wasted my time and theirs. Maybe better luck if you arrive at the start of service, otherwise I suspect the type of handbag you bring will dictate the level of service you get. Enjoy!

Good but no longer in Palma’s top tier.

Great food. Rushed service. I live in Palma so have had a chance to discover and enjoy many of its finer restaurants. I finally booked a table at Forn. The food was good but the service felt closer to a food hall — rushed, with only quick pauses at the table to drop off or pick up. I wanted sooo badly to love it, but there are other other restaurants –younger restaurants– that have pushed the food + service + ambiance game to a higher level. To be clear — the meal was nice and the food was good. But if you’re only on the island for a few days and want to enjoy the best of the best; this isn’t it.

Very Disappointing!!

We have been going to Forn for the last 10 years and decided to go recently with friends who had never been to Palma or the restaurant. The waiter got the starter wrong, the main course was steak with sauteed potatoes and we only found one little potato sliced into 5........ The food was lukewarm and very disappointing. We then got charged for an extra Hendricks Gin and when the waiter was challenged he said we hadn't but after us insisting that we only had two he deducted it from the bill. An incident happened like this a few years ago when we got charged for the drinks on another table. Is there a pattern forming here. Please anyone who goes here for a meal Check Your Bill. I am sorry to say that I will not be visiting here again.

Forn re-opened on the 8th July and full marks to the owners and staff for getting this wonderful restaurant up and running as the crisis eases a little. We visited twice - for drinks on the 8th July and for dinner on the 10th July. The menu is outstanding, the ambience is always great and service is without fault. So congrats to everyone and we hope you get a bit more success during the remainder of the season - you deserve it!

Holiday dining par excellence

This is the embodiment of good holiday gastronomy: the food here evokes memories of great times gone by and at the same time creates new ones. Good restaurants (and this place is u questionably that) celebrate their traditions while introducing new elements. The papas bravas with achieve exactly that and make the place obviously Spanish, the cannelloni starts off with the earthy taste of mushrooms, is freshened up with the zing of lemongrass and ends with a warm hug from your mum’s roast chicken. The sucking pig is a great celebration of the animal without being heavy, the croquets have a deep flavour of cod but with lemon sharpness and the heat from horseradish aren’t heavy. The crowning glory of the meal though has to be the pudding. Black and white is sensational! It combines a refined mouse, grown up Italian meringue yet ends up reminding you of the chocolate milkshake so often served at kids clubs in the 90s. It allows you to unashamedly enjoy sweet things like a child in adulthood. The wine list ist good and the cocktails a brilliant start to the meal though it would also be unfair to not mention the very kind and attentive service from the dedicated staff who quite obviously love what they do and where the do it. Thank you once again and see you next time.

Perfect..

We were devastated to find this restaurant on our last night in Palma because it is literally PERFECT!! The experience is fantastic from start to finish. The staff are so welcoming and know the menu inside out, they offer insights into dishes that you may like based on the things that you share with them (thank you so much Natasha). The food.. it’s like a symphony of different layers of flavours that bounce off your tongue.. do not leave this restaurant without trying the pineapple, celery and coriander.. surprising but more importantly delicious, contemporary and food worthy of world wide acclaim. If only we had found this restaurant earlier I am sure we would have gone back. Palma is a culinary melt pool of flavours and experiences but this is definitely the best of them all.. we will be booking flights back and revisiting! Thank you so much.

Next level tapas but not the best service

We made reservations here for dinner for two. Upon arrival we were quickly assigned our table on the first floor of the restaurant. Unfortunately, this was not a very cozy spot as opposed to one by the window. When we asked if we could sit there, they told us that this was only possible when explicitly requested at reservation. I always find this a bit unfortunate because you can't really know this in advance... The two starters that we initially wanted to order (and were on the menu) were unfortunately not available. So we ordered some tapas: pane con tomate, patatas bravas and cod croquettes. All of this was very tasty and beautifully presented. Afterwards we shared a starter: a dish with zucchini, asparagus, an egg and parmesan cream. This was also delicious. The service on the other hand was mediocre. We weren't given particular attention and when we asked for the dessert menu, we were given the cocktail menu. Also, all the dishes were brought a little too quickly in our opinion so we left the restaurant already after one hour. In short: amazing food, but if you find good service and a vibrant atmosphere important, this is not the place to go.

Hugely disappointing

We visited En Forn de Sant Joan tonight on recommendation, but unfortunately it proved to be hugely disappointing. Prior to our visit, I looked at the menu on the website and the tapas “Sensation” seemed very tempting. However, when we arrived we were told that this menu was no longer available and we were given a different menu. Ok, so we ordered starters and mains, both starters were very nice and my Wife’s sea bass main was lovely. However, once again unfortunately the Orecchiette Veal Ragu pasta dish had no veal or ragu with it! The staff apologised and agreed this dish wasn’t as described on the menu and I wasn’t charged. But my big issue is that why is this restaurant so hit and miss? Is it because the owners are concentrating on their new restaurant La Cana? Oddly enough we were not the only couple to have issues this evening. A real shame, but we won’t be going back to En Forn Sant Joan or any restaurant in this group.

One of the best tapas I have ever tasted

We were looking for a nice place to eat while in Palma and saw that this was reviewed and recommended by a lot of people. The food was simply amazing, there is nothing I can add to change or improve anything. The only drawback was their very weird booking system. Apparently they stop receiving for same day bookings at 6pm but I was still able to access their booking system on their website at 20:30 for a table at 21:30. When we arrived, the host said we were not on their system and booking cut-off time is at 6pm which caught us by surprise as we literally got the table from their own website. So then we had to wait for about 30 minutes for our table although we were perfectly on time. It was a minor inconvenience which could have easily been avoided. If not for the weird booking system, the dinner would have been perfect.

High quality dining at reasonable prices

Forn de S. Joan serves high quality food and wine with care and local pride. It was such a good experience the first night that I returned a second time curious to try other dishes from the menu but also to taste other combinations of wine on offer. Service was attentive without any pressure to eat and go as is often the experience of other restaurants in central Palma.

Bland and uninspiring

We had been recommended the restaurant by friends and also via various websites. We found the whole experience completely underwhelming - the food itself was good but the atmosphere was completely lacklustre. It felt like a production line where the restaurant staff had been trained to upsell as much as possible with zero passion for the actual product. We also felt that it was more of a tourist attraction than a restaurant - we were sat in a room with only British visitors. We will neither return nor recommend it to anyone.
