As you walk in the automatic outer doors almost take you by surprise. So into a warm, galley-like twin row of tables leading to the bar and kitchen area you venture. Only to find round the corner it expands to twice the size. The menu was clearly printed in Spanish and English and offered a decent variety of meat, fish... More

We were in Barcelona for one night after our cruise and before we flew home to the U.S. and I really wanted Paella in Spain. The problem is, I don't eat mammals or mussels. We asked our hotel to recommend a place and they took us further than we wanted to walk and the place they recommended ended up not... More

Hugo's is a Chilean restaurant located in La Ribera area of Barcelona. We tried here as it was close to our accommodation and, being Chilean, it was one of the few places that wasn't completely full on Catalan national day. Staff are friendly and eager to please. As they are less of a tourist restaurant, their English is less good... More

Great food, very very friendly stuff. Our booking wasn't confirmed with them, we did it through a website, but they still managed to find a table for us and we got complementary drinks for waiting 10 min for a table.

We ducked in here during a downpour. We took a look at the menu and decided to turn our sheltering into an early dinner. Good decision! Hearty good local food of a much higher quality than the usual tourist tapas traps. Very friendly service, tolerant of my appalling Catalan. And very reasonably priced.

Hugo is very different to most of the touristy tapas bars in this quarter. Its focus is on a traditional starter-main meal set up and seems to aim at the locals and students for most of its trade. This means that there are a few negatives : - its not as 'nice' inside as the tourist traps, a bit of... More

Staying in El Born / La Ribera

Neighbourhood Profile
El Born / La Ribera
The labyrinth that is El Born becomes most apparent the moment you turn down one of its side streets. But this is one of the few labyrinths you might actually enjoy losing your way in. After all, there are few places that live and breathe such exciting energy regardless of the time of day. This neighbourhood seamlessly transcends the old and new parts of the city, reflected in its vast array of restaurants ranging from fancy Michelin-star establishments to trendy fusion restaurants. Here you'll find historical and cultural attractions such as the popular Picasso Museum and the Gothic cathedral La Santa Maria del Mar, where you just might be able to catch a traditional Catalan wedding.
