The tortilla was perfectly cooked with incredible flavours - definitely the best I have tried. The sangria was divine and the servers were considerate and warm, making our dining experience wonderful. I would come back in a heartbeat.

Is it the best? I don't know, but it is the best I have ever eaten... Be aware that even the small tortilla is quite large and that there are many more great dishes on offer, we made the mistake of over ordering and then over eating, but no regrets! Definitely worthy of all the fantastic reviews.

Best tortilla in town. If you walk past you wouldn't go in. But I promised it is the best tortilla ever. Must go. Super traditional and simple. It's not a tourist trap.

Taken here by a local guide. Not the sort of place we'd have visited on our own as the entrance is down a corridor leading to the caverns under the Plaza Major. Great tasting tortilla made just from eggs and potato. Highly recommended a visit.

Of course among the tourist places in the area around Plaza Mayor, however just like everywhere else in Madrid the trick is to order the right thing. And here the tortilla with sangria is a must, nothing more and nothing less!

because "tortilla" in Spanish means something different than the Mexican one. Every time you see "tortilla" in Spain should think in an omelette, any kind of it, but an omelette. And the most popular one is the "tortilla española", the Spanish Omelette. Ok, here you will taste one of the best "tortillas" in Madrid, believe a local with some experience...... More

Back in the 1980's, I spent nearly five years living in Madrid and had the incredible opportunity to experience the culinary delights that Spain has to offer. I always managed to include El Meson de la Tortilla on the weekends after visiting the dance clubs and really loved going there. I usually return to Spain every year or so to... More

I visited this restaurant, which is under the Plaza Major, as part of a tapas tour. It was very unusual, literally being built in the caves below the city. The service and food were excellent and I would highly recommend it.

Staying in Centro

Neighbourhood Profile
Centro
Expansive plazas, local and foreign crowds, street performers, colorful lights, window shopping, restaurant signs promising the best paella, ham, and churros con chocolate- this is downtown Madrid, a collection of plazas interconnected by a network of side streets. Some of these side streets are wide pedestrian shopping routes, and some are hidden, so it's possible to duck in and out of the bustle as desired. The iconic Puerta del Sol is the giant crossroads of the city and a must-see attraction at any time of the day. The nearby Plaza Mayor, completely enclosed by historic red buildings, is an ideal place to grab a bite to eat outside, amidst scores of tables and people out for a stroll. Plaza Isabel II (also known as “Opera”) is smaller and a good meeting spot, and the stately Plaza del Oriente is the front yard of the Royal Palace. Centro can be touristy (pickpockets are unfortuately not unheard-of here), crowded, and sometimes gimmicky, but it is also the place to experience classic Madrid.
