Classic tapas place. The classic gambas were very good with the bread but it is very very pricey compared to other tapas places. If anything just order the small dish of gambas only and no drinks and move on.

Saw this restaurant in a Rick Steves video and had to visit. You can't beat shrimp with garlic. One tip - there are two restaurants owned by this family. At one place, you can stand up and eat tapas style and the other (across the street) you can sit down. After a lot of walking we were grateful for the... More

Had great paella, freshly made and good service. Everything coming out of the kitchen looked great and you could see it being prepared.

A traditional and busy standing bar with the sitting restaurant opposite, but the standing bar has much better atmosphere and gets busier so would recommend that! The Spanish guy who works (owns) the bar is very traditional with poor english but for me, that is what you should expect! The food is incredible. It serves only prawns/shrimp, cooked by the... The shrimp in garlic and chili oil is a MUST have! They also give a tasty bread roll that you should dip to soak up all the oil. Wash it down with the sweet red wine or white wine - Perfect - if you have vegetarians in your groups they do a lovely oil and garlic tomato platter too. This... More

We visited this place late afternoon when it was quiet. The prawns really are to die for but do really burn a hole in your wallet on a VFM basis. Despite the price I would still go again the next time that I am in town.

Where would you rather go for good food, a little boisterous elbowing and a glass of wine than to your Abuelo's? Such fun. I highly recommend making this a stop on your walking tour of Madrid.

This is a 100-year-old restaurant that has been run by the same family for 4 generations. The menu is very focused and traditional. The atmosphere and food were excellent. The house wines were fabulous. They also have a house olive oil which is among the best I've tasted. This isn't a restaurant with a huge varied menu, so be sure... More

La Casa del Abuelo is one of the Tapas Bars that you can't miss if you visit Madrid. This house is more than 100 years old and it's one of the most representative Taverns in Madrid. Specialities are shrimps in all of its varieties: grilled, with coarse salt and looking for the prefect cooking point and garlic shrimps, served in our terracotta casseroles with virgin olive oil, garlic and parsley.
The tradition is to eat the shrimps with the red sweet wine "El Abuelo" that made this house famous.
Today everything is served the same way than 100 years ago!

Staying in Centro

Neighbourhood Profile
Expansive plazas, local and foreign crowds, street performers, colorful lights, window shopping, restaurant signs promising the best paella, ham, and churros con chocolate- this is downtown Madrid, a collection of plazas interconnected by a network of side streets. Some of these side streets are wide pedestrian shopping routes, and some are hidden, so it's possible to duck in and out of the bustle as desired. The iconic Puerta del Sol is the giant crossroads of the city and a must-see attraction at any time of the day. The nearby Plaza Mayor, completely enclosed by historic red buildings, is an ideal place to grab a bite to eat outside, amidst scores of tables and people out for a stroll. Plaza Isabel II (also known as “Opera”) is smaller and a good meeting spot, and the stately Plaza del Oriente is the front yard of the Royal Palace. Centro can be touristy (pickpockets are unfortuately not unheard-of here), crowded, and sometimes gimmicky, but it is also the place to experience classic Madrid.
