So, if you love shrimps, thats your place! Really fantastic, small, traditional place, serving one kind of dish in a fantastic way! You must have the sizzling garlic shrimp to enjoy the experience!

Checked this place out as part of a Gourmet Tasting Tapas Tour. This place was one of the highlights as they really knew how to cook garlic shrimp. They’re super famous for their shrimp dishes and it’s definitely a can’t miss opportunity. Their sweet wine is also what they’re known for so don’t miss out.

We came here as part of the Tapas Tour and would return! The shrimp (El Abuelo's) were hot and tasted great, served with bread.

If you want to try the finest just-defrosted pale air-tasted shrimps stir-fried in low-end oil come to this place. Moreover, if you want to tell your pals back in home you were blatantly ripped-off...do no miss this place. Unforgettable. Shamefull.

This place is always crowded but this is part of its charm. Standing in this very old bar, you try the specialty of gambas al arillo (garlic prawns) with a glass of red wine. The walls are covered of painted ceramics and pictures of toreros. Mix between a touristic attraction and the traditional Madrid. Well worth a try. Price slightly... More

We happened to come here on a walking tapas tour and I am so glad we did! Even though tourists come here it is also full of locals. In fact, it was so packed the first time we stopped in that we had to skip it and come back later! The gambas al allijio (shrimp in garlic sauce) are absolutely... More

This was part of our Devour Madrid tour and we loved it. They have a broad range of traditional tapas and great house wine. I would go back again anytime.

The food was just amazing. We went to their main location but they have a couple different branches within a very short distance. So, if you are only into fine-dining, then this isn't the place for you. Also, if you can't sit on a stool, then you should try other locations than the main one. The shrimp was extremely good,... La Casa del Abuelo is one of the Tapas Bars that you can't miss if you visit Madrid. This house is more than 100 years old and it's one of the most representative Taverns in Madrid. Specialities are shrimps in all of its varieties: grilled, with coarse salt and looking for the prefect cooking point and garlic shrimps, served in our terracotta casseroles with virgin olive oil, garlic and parsley.
The tradition is to eat the shrimps with the red sweet wine "El Abuelo" that made this house famous.
Today everything is served the same way than 100 years ago!

Staying in Centro

Neighbourhood Profile
Expansive plazas, local and foreign crowds, street performers, colorful lights, window shopping, restaurant signs promising the best paella, ham, and churros con chocolate- this is downtown Madrid, a collection of plazas interconnected by a network of side streets. Some of these side streets are wide pedestrian shopping routes, and some are hidden, so it's possible to duck in and out of the bustle as desired. The iconic Puerta del Sol is the giant crossroads of the city and a must-see attraction at any time of the day. The nearby Plaza Mayor, completely enclosed by historic red buildings, is an ideal place to grab a bite to eat outside, amidst scores of tables and people out for a stroll. Plaza Isabel II (also known as “Opera”) is smaller and a good meeting spot, and the stately Plaza del Oriente is the front yard of the Royal Palace. Centro can be touristy (pickpockets are unfortuately not unheard-of here), crowded, and sometimes gimmicky, but it is also the place to experience classic Madrid.
