The food was just amazing. We went to their main location but they have a couple different branches within a very short distance. So, if you are only into fine-dining, then this isn't the place for you. Also, if you can't sit on a stool, then you should try other locations than the main one. The shrimp was extremely good,... We were on a foodie tour with Devour Madrid, and La Casa del Abuela was our 3rd stop of the night. The shrimp with garlic and chili is served simply, straight off the heat of the burner, sizzling and bubbling merrily in a little clay dish. It was divine! A small basket of baguette slices is served along with so... More

We only had the garlic prawns (€10.90 a portion) that this Tapas bar is famous for, but they were very good. Nice atmosphere, good wine, friendly lady looking after us and the place just drips with character. Well worth a visit.

We enjoyed the food and atmosphere so much that we went back for a second visit. The sangria is delicious and the food is also great, albeit a limited menu.

We paid €12 for a plate of Parma ham. The smell is great but there is no choice of other dishes if you don't fancy fish

This is a genuine piece of Madrid which everyone must visit at least once (although if you visit once you will certainly go again, believe me). As my wife cannot stand the smell and taste of garlic, I didn’t have the opportunity to taste the gambas al ajillo, the house specialty. We had the grilled prawns (gambas a la plancha)... More

I have visited Madrid a few times in the past and always make for La Casa del Abuelo (Grandfather's House). It is a great place and indeed is unique among the other bars in the area. Essentially it is a place that you go en route to your restaurant or if you are out just eating tapas then this is... More

It is hard to walk by this place and not be drawn in by the smell of garlic shrimp cooked over an open flame. they had excellent wines and the scampi lived up the the smell.

This cosy place has great food and excellent service. We had the shrimps in hot pan - so delicious! Best hot tapas we had in Madrid. It's a bit more expensive than others, but so worth it. We will definitely be back again.

La Casa del Abuelo is one of the Tapas Bars that you can't miss if you visit Madrid. This house is more than 100 years old and it's one of the most representative Taverns in Madrid. Specialities are shrimps in all of its varieties: grilled, with coarse salt and looking for the prefect cooking point and garlic shrimps, served in our terracotta casseroles with virgin olive oil, garlic and parsley.
The tradition is to eat the shrimps with the red sweet wine "El Abuelo" that made this house famous.
Today everything is served the same way than 100 years ago!

Staying in Centro

Neighbourhood Profile
Expansive plazas, local and foreign crowds, street performers, colorful lights, window shopping, restaurant signs promising the best paella, ham, and churros con chocolate- this is downtown Madrid, a collection of plazas interconnected by a network of side streets. Some of these side streets are wide pedestrian shopping routes, and some are hidden, so it's possible to duck in and out of the bustle as desired. The iconic Puerta del Sol is the giant crossroads of the city and a must-see attraction at any time of the day. The nearby Plaza Mayor, completely enclosed by historic red buildings, is an ideal place to grab a bite to eat outside, amidst scores of tables and people out for a stroll. Plaza Isabel II (also known as “Opera”) is smaller and a good meeting spot, and the stately Plaza del Oriente is the front yard of the Royal Palace. Centro can be touristy (pickpockets are unfortuately not unheard-of here), crowded, and sometimes gimmicky, but it is also the place to experience classic Madrid.
