As we were staying above Cafe de Oriente, we decided to give it a try on our second night. Upstairs there is a bar and casual dining (salads, tapas, sandwiches etc) we opted to go downstairs for something a little more special. The decor does not disappoint, however it is difficult to see how busy the restaurant is before you... More

Great position near the Royal Palace, we are dinner so were down stairs which is a really nice area. Staff were friendly and helpful and the food was delicious. We had fois gras & goats cheese froth to start then cod fish served 3 ways. Good atmosphere as there were 2 groups of 10 in the restaurant plus another table... More

Like 20 of us went to this very special location in a great neighbourhood. Starting with the food I really liked the tapas but then, as several times before in Spain, the main wasn't as good. My fish was rather tasteless although the quality seemed to be alright. We had a lovely red wine and the service looked well after... More

Very beautiful place. The food was very good. Not too expensive. Good coktails as well! But we were in between services so the staff was kinda slow.

Hearty breakfast with egg, bacon and fries. The food is quite tasty but the service needs to be a bit speedier. I had to get the waiter's attention to order and to get the bill. The interior decor is quite nice and feels classy. For 25-30 euros we got two big portions of breakfast with coffee/tea and freshly squeezed orange... More

We were brought her by some Spanish friends and had they not been with us we would never have gone in. It looks very expensive and a bit too high end for a coffee stop, how wrong we would have been. We got a fantastic welcome and straight away we were won over by the beautiful old style decor. Cakes... More

Nice place for resting with coffee and sweet, or even a shot drink. Staff is friendly. Prices are acceptable.

The place is beautiful and the location is amazing... but we were expecting more quality in the type foods...coffee is great, but still room for improvement in the outside tables...takes so long to come.

Staying in Centro

Neighbourhood Profile
Centro
Expansive plazas, local and foreign crowds, street performers, colorful lights, window shopping, restaurant signs promising the best paella, ham, and churros con chocolate- this is downtown Madrid, a collection of plazas interconnected by a network of side streets. Some of these side streets are wide pedestrian shopping routes, and some are hidden, so it's possible to duck in and out of the bustle as desired. The iconic Puerta del Sol is the giant crossroads of the city and a must-see attraction at any time of the day. The nearby Plaza Mayor, completely enclosed by historic red buildings, is an ideal place to grab a bite to eat outside, amidst scores of tables and people out for a stroll. Plaza Isabel II (also known as “Opera”) is smaller and a good meeting spot, and the stately Plaza del Oriente is the front yard of the Royal Palace. Centro can be touristy (pickpockets are unfortuately not unheard-of here), crowded, and sometimes gimmicky, but it is also the place to experience classic Madrid.
