A restaurant like this is bound to generate mixed reviews. I can't speak to the dinner offerings, and yes the waiters are often surly and slow, but at other times, like breakfast, things are hopping like at an American diner, and you get a big breakfast for cheap. Or just coffee and croissants at the counter if that's your pleasure.... More

Sat outside on the terrace one evening, looking out at the Reina Sofia, munching on the "famous calamari" sandwich. Thought the taste was good, didn't detect that it was previously frozen, it actually tasted quite fresh and the roll was great. Prices were a little higher out on the terrace as expected. Understand that there might be other less famous... More

We came after it was recommended in various guides for its fried squid sandwich, even on the outside they write they have the best "bocadillos con calamares" of all Madrid. I absolutely do not recommend this place, the food and drinks are ovepriced compared to the poor quality. The famous sandiwch consists of a small frozen white baguette filled with... More

This place seems to have got a bit of a bad rep on TA? I visited on the back of the 1001 restaurants book and found it perfectly ok. A little more expensive for food than other places, but it's near museums/tourist area so was not a surprise. Food was very tasty and there was a good range of food... More

We wanted to enjoy the in Madrid famous "Bocadillo de Calamares" and entered as the sign promised to be "the best". We received a "normal" bocadillo and the price was for one sandwich and one bear a horrendous 8,50 Euros!!

We had just toured the Prado National Museum and the Reina Sofia national museum so wanted to stop for a quick bite to eat and drink. We had walked past this place and our guide recommended the calamari bocadillo, so we took his advice and headed there after the tour. Such a busy, well run place. People and staff everywhere.... Thinking of splitting a bottle of wine and some pizza? Let me save you €7... As two people who have considerable experience with frozen grocery store pizza, it was fairly ominous that when the margarita pizza showed up we both looked at each other and said, "well this looks familiar". See the attached images for yourself. Looked like, tasted like,... More

My wife, two children and I visited Madrid in December 2016. El Brillante is located across from the Atocha train station. I went here twice. Once for breakfast at 7 am. I ate standing up at the counter like a local. I had cappuccino and churros. At 7 am it is not too crowded and the service is quick. The... More

On a short visit to Madrid with friends we chose to eat here twice. They seem very popular and provide a large selection of classic tapas, very well prepared, with great efficiency and lots of rustic style. Highly recommended - although it might be confusing for a non-Spanish speaker.

Staying in Paseo del Prado

Neighbourhood Profile
Paseo del Prado
The area around the elegant Paseo del Prado boulevard is much-visited by both locals and tourists. The world-famous Prado, the Reina Sofia, and the Thyssen-Bornemisza museums form a triangle of art and culture that spans this grand and beautiful avenue. On weekdays, the Prado Museum opens its doors for free after-work hours, drawing a diverse and excited queue of art lovers that wraps around the block. Palacio de Cibeles and Círculo de Bellas Artes cultural centers are other artsy hangouts to check out, with rooftop bars that provide impressive views of the city. While the Paseo del Prado and its roundabouts form a busy throughway in Madrid, a broad green pedestrian park in the middle is a calm and gorgeous place for a relaxing stroll. Just east of the museums, the Retiro Park is always a confluence of activity as families and friends of all ages take to the pretty paths and lawns to stretch their legs or to have a picnic.
