We were having a great time in Madrid, for our final evening we decided to book here for a meal because they widely advertise flamenco dancing at 9.30pm on Friday nights. Two mediocre main meals ONLY and a few drinks cost more than 50 Euros and the flamenco advert us just a lie to trap tourists to this establishment to... More

Went in 2014, loved it! Went again in 2016 and fell in love again! I enjoyed every tapas the place offered. My favorite 2 tapas were the white anchovies tapas and the snails in sauce. I recommend this place to anyone visiting Madrid.

I went to this restaurant / taberna knowing that it was the oldest of Spain, and I had a really great time. The staff were very nice and the food quite tasty. It was a magical experience, certainly to repeat!

I was recommended this place by a local, which is always a good thing when looking for somewhere new to try out. The Taberna Antonio Sanchez has been around since 1830 - you can feel the history as you step through the door - from the benches on your left as you enter, to the bullfighting memorabilia on the walls... This old-fashioned restaurant and bar does good traditional tapas and excellent wine. It also has a restaurant in the back, and serves a competitively-priced menu del dia. The small grilled peppers with sea salt and garlic - pimientos del padron - are very moreish, and the service is efficient and friendly. Prices are reasonable.

Excellent Spanish food, more from the center than the mediterranean style. One of the oldest bars in Madrid, it's tradicion started in 1830 and it has been running since then. If you want to taste what "typical" means in Madrid, this is your place. Prices are mid range, about 20 Euros per person for a good dinner with wine.

This restaurant and bar is one of the few bullfighting aficionados left from the old days. Dark colored walls with stuffed bull heads, serious waiters, a nice little front bar area to have drinks and tapas. The place is just oozing with history, and up until recently was a regular hangout for the local flamenco guitarists for a quiet drink... More

We had a lovely lunch at this restaurant. Our waiter was so kind and good humoured. He took his time to explain all of the menu to us and made some recommendations. We were very pleased with the food and found it excellent value for money!

This little tapas bar dates back to the mid eighteenth century and as you walk through its doors it is like stepping back in time with every part of its interior original . We had a warm greeting as soon as we walked in and were seated immediately, drinks were served and food was ordered . Patatas Bravas , meatballs... More

Good quality and fairly priced. Friendly service. It's rare that a historically significant establishment also offers a positive food experience.

Neighbourhood Profile
Walking into this neighbourhood is like entering a different country ... except it's hard to tell which one it is. One side of Calle Lavapiés is lined with Indian restaurants, the other with kebab shops. Men in traditional African clothing convene outside their businesses for long chats, and people shout to each other across plazas and streets. Interspersed among ethnic specialty shops are independent theaters and dance studios, and two large arts and cultural centers — the beautiful Casa Encendida and the Tabacalera, a former tobacco factory — all of which attract young crowds. Along Calle Argumosa, the place to go for drinks, artists and art appreciators with piercings and dreadlocks convene in the street’s eclectic array of young, hip bars. Though some of the side streets can get a little seedy at night, Lavapiés is still the place to go for those seeking a unique blend of arts and culture in an international and funky neighbourhood.
