I am Spanish and every single time I come to Madrid I go to the san miguel market. I think that the quality of the market overall is going down, pushed by the tourism and crowds. But Lhardy's stand was possible the worst food experience I have had in years. We got the sea urchin, which was mainly potato, and... More

Note that this review is for the old restaurant upstairs, not the place in Mercado de San Miguel or the downstairs shop. There is a confusion in the ratinq as the reviews include everyhing under the Lhardy name. The upscale restaurant and the shop in Mercado are completely different eateries for different type of clients. The old restaurant is wonderfully... More

Tried the Lhardy location in Mercado de San Miguel for a quick snack and I would say they have a very interesting selection of Tapas that are not traditional Spanish. Definitely worth a peek.

My husband and I chose Lhardy based on a recommendation in Lonely Planet and also other reviews. While we knew it was going to be pricey, and as it was our last evening in Madrid before heading home, we decided that a great meal would be worth the price. What a DISAPPOINTMENT. The decor is certainly reflective of the era.... More

I had a great dinner at Lhardy, gazpacho,"Bacalao" with garlic sauce and as dessert a surprise, made with ice cream, that I shared with my mom because was very big. The waiter was very kind, nice and friendly and the service was fast, maybe also because the restaurant wasn't crowded at all. The bill was quite high, but we ate... More

The food is not fresh but not really bad itself. The problem is the woman who works there - extremely impolite and not helpful at all. I bought some things that she had put in the microwave for a few seconds but were still cold when I took the first bite. Went back there and asked her to heat it... More

Manipulative. Overpriced. Bad. I ordered 3 items as a crowd of people pressed to order. The server (an older, skinnier woman) added on two more of the same item (goat cheese croquette) while quickly saying "I recommend these too". Without even waiting for my permission they were whisked into the microwave. It wasn't until I counted my change I realized... More

I visit this restaurant once a year, always tasting the same courses: Cocido madrileño and Callos a la madrileña. As a reference I would say that is the only place where I eat "callos". For me is a bite of Madrid, and ancient (over 100 years of real history) place with an old style food serving attitude. The waitstaff is... More

Just off Puerta del Sol, Lhardy is a historical shop / restaurant offering delicatessen food and top quality dining in the salons above the shop. Reservation is mandatory and the place is pricey...but this is possibly the best restaurant in Madrid. We went for cocido madrileño and it was an amazing experience, service was phenonenal too. When I can afford... More

The owner gave us a tour of the restaurant. Great stories about Spanish royalty. Awesome pastries, great and relaxed place but lots of class. Loved it!!!

Staying in Centro

Neighbourhood Profile
Expansive plazas, local and foreign crowds, street performers, colorful lights, window shopping, restaurant signs promising the best paella, ham, and churros con chocolate- this is downtown Madrid, a collection of plazas interconnected by a network of side streets. Some of these side streets are wide pedestrian shopping routes, and some are hidden, so it's possible to duck in and out of the bustle as desired. The iconic Puerta del Sol is the giant crossroads of the city and a must-see attraction at any time of the day. The nearby Plaza Mayor, completely enclosed by historic red buildings, is an ideal place to grab a bite to eat outside, amidst scores of tables and people out for a stroll. Plaza Isabel II (also known as “Opera”) is smaller and a good meeting spot, and the stately Plaza del Oriente is the front yard of the Royal Palace. Centro can be touristy (pickpockets are unfortuately not unheard-of here), crowded, and sometimes gimmicky, but it is also the place to experience classic Madrid.
