I have visited da danillo many times in the past 10 years...a classic when I am coming to Rome Needless to say that service has never been the attraction of the restaurant but after an unpleasant start we usually managed to relax the atmosphere (ordering a lot of food and fine wines) and that was fine. This time around the... More

I should have known better than to stray. The carbonara here is my favorite and that includes the carbonara at Pipero al Rex. Here, everything balances in your mouth like a nice chemical equation. Just enough runny egg but not too runny. Just enough cheese but so much to overpower the egg or the hefty thick and spacious super sprinkles... More

It is better to eat a crust of bread in a happy place than a sumptuous meal in a place of discontent. It is a shame that the servers were snobbish because the food was absolutely delicious. The owner, however, was pleasant and accommodating. Maybe the servers are his family and that's why they get away with being rude. The... More

One of the best restaurants in Rome, the food is amazing, the staff and the owner are very welcoming and the atmosphere is very characteristic. I was here last year and loved it and will keep coming back every time I will be in Rome

Small but very cosy traditional Roman trattoria. Excellent antipasti although our shared serving was quite smallish. The carbonara with black truffle was to die for, one of the best pasta dishes I've had, and a creamy tiramisu to top it of. An extensive wine list with a lot of vini naturale didn't hurt either.

Wonderful Roman food in a classic trattoria setting, well off the typical tourist route. The welcome is friendly, the service is attentive, the cooking is perfect, the prices are more than reasonable. The menu is based on seasonal specialties and Rome's 'canonical' classics. Walls are lined with photos of Danilo himself with various local celebrities. You simply cannot go wrong... More

we knew this place from an earlier visit. try not to be seated with the other tourists at the cellar floor, ignore the grumpy service (it is not personal) and just enjoy the classic roman dishes, like carbonara and cacio e pepe.

Well frequented by locals and you need to book to get in. Menu is a bit limited but the dishes are very good and beautiful presentation.

The place is a bit snoby and not being high society, I did feel a bit looked down upon, but the meal was very good and the service fine. Prices are on the high side but not through the moon. Except the beer, which is 14€.

Food was delicious!! We had Carbonara and Cacio e Pepe. Both dishes were very tasty. The guy who works there was great and friendly but unfortunately the girl was very bad. Her attitude should be different to the clients. Not good at all. Not friendly at all. Prices are ok but the wine is too expensive for the quality, comparing... More

Staying in Esquilino

Neighbourhood Profile
Old school vibe from the very beginning is the only way to describe the Esquilino neighbourhood. The Esquilino takes pride in being one of the oldest areas in Rome for its key location on one of the city’s famous seven hills. From an ancient neighbourhood to its modern incarnation as a multicultural hub, Esquilino always has something going on—polyglot vendors debate street artists while kids play pick-up basketball games. Look around you: this area isn’t like the historic centre. Liberty architecture, large piazzas, and long boulevards mix with archaic arches, secret side alleys, and beautiful churches like Santa Maria Maggiore.
