I had many occasion to visit this restaurant and everytime I have found food excellent and a warm and careful treatment by the staff and the chef itself. Every dish was properly introduced by the chef in person and proposed with the correct wine.I suggest this restaurant to the fish food lovers.

Had tried to book this before we left uk. Were really pleased when we stumbled across it while walking around the town, very tucked away. We called in and talked with chef/owner??, he was great, passionate about his local food, describing the tasting menus, assuring us he could adapt to suit our palates. (Didn't need to) We booked for our... More

I reserved this restaurant for a group of 12 on a saturday for dinner. Franco was very flexible and accommodating. We agreed on the classic tasting menu (degustazione classico). 5 people canceled a couple of hours ahead and Franco did not make a fuss. He did not charge us. The wines were excellent, the appetizer and dessert superb. The main... More

We went with my wife at Il Clandestino last Saturday. This is a fish restaurant nearby the lake in Stresa. Place: nice, a bit more quiet than the lake shore Menu: appealing, meals aren't that expensive for the place and the quality of the products (which is great for fish, right?) BUT we had a major issue with the waiter.... More

Il Clandestino specializes in fish and seafood - not the type of cuisine I usually prefer, but the food was exceptional. Don't expect to find anything as basic as fish and chips; every dish was creatively and carefully put together and it tasted delicious! Our waiter was very attentive and spoke perfect English, explaining the Italian menu in detail. We... More

We haven't been to Stresa for 5 years, so a repeat visit to Il Clandestino was at the top of our list. I wandered in one day to make a reservation, to find chef/padrone Franco sitting in the restaurant, chatting with a friend. After indulging my elementary Italian to make the booking, he switched into English and said "you've been... More

Our host recommended this 1* restaurant to us. Never having been to a 1* before we were very dubious and slightly nervous to say the least. Marco our waiter could not have been more helpful or patient with us. He very professionally and friendly guided us through some suggestions of wine and food taking into account our likes and dislikes.... More

On the recommendation of our hotel concierge we gave this a try as we were in the mood for fish. Very glad for the recommendation. From the moment we entered the service was attentive and friendly without being over the top. Franco's food was simple, elegant and delicious. Lovely pasta and a great fish dish. Food allergy was accommodated with... More

6 of us walked in late with no reservations, but they took great care of us. The chef came out to talk about what was available on his menu and we had a great meal!

You won't be disappointed with Il Clandestino...but don't go here if you're looking to save money. It is not crazy-expensive or anything, but if you go in expecting to have a meal on a budget you just won't feel comfortable letting the chef and host "drive" in that way that will give you the best experience here. The chef and... More
