What a great place. They have a very simple menu which is displayed on the wall but the quality of the food is excellent. If you are a lover of seafood and Venetian cuisine then you want be disappointed. However, you must book in advance as they don't have many tables and they are very popular with the locals. It... We popped in here for lunch one day. It was around the corner from our hotel and the hotel owner had described it as very, very informal. Perfect! It is a typical Venetian Cicchetteria and was full of locals all eating, drinking and chatting away. The cheapest way to eat is to find a spot somewhere in the bar and... More

Were advised to try this place the locals go to. Fabulous atmosphere, great food, very different but delicious and a taste of the real Venice. Very good value and extremely helpful. Fully booked tables but ate and drank standing up at a shelf and then at a barrel table sitting on the window cill.

We'd walked past a couple of times whilst getting lost and had admired their huge selection of chicchetti. Finally we stopped off one evening to sample the delights on offer. We were greeted warmly on arrival and served food and drink quickly. The restaurant was fully booked but we managed to bag the little barrel table and chairs near the... More

It was only ok this time and we visited twice this December, just to make sure that the first visit was not on an off day. The cicchetti were not piled quite as high as they used to be, the baccala was gray and not white, and the eggplant parmigiana was not melting all over the plate. It sort of... More

This was the first time when i was served pre cooked and microwaved risotto. I never knew this was still happening. Beware, the food is mostly pre-cooked and microwaved and is mediocre at best.

We liked this place. The food was good and they were really nice. The cicchetti were good, but there was something like mayonnaise that I didn't like. The pasta was very good.

Super nice place to have aperitivo. Perfect and lovely location and particular food. It's one of the Bacaretto to visit! I had some snacks (cicchetti) and aperolspritz. I don't know about the dinner but i think it's more a place to drink, snack and chat.

We made a reservation after noticing how busy this place was every time we passed by. It is a very casual place where the staff are moving at top speed to keep up. It is very crowded and loud. There were two of us for dinner. We shared a plate of fritto misto which was superb. The fish was very... More

There aren't many affordable and well rated restaurants in Venice so we booked ahead at this place, which looks lovely, and went along full of anticipation. Certainly the tapas at the bar look amazing. But we sat at the tables and had he menu. It sounded good but was variable. Gnocchi were delicious, but the pasta was so-so and the... More

Staying in Castello

Neighbourhood Profile
Castello
Castello is the largest of the six sestieri (districts), and the only one not facing onto the Grand Canal. More than half of Castello is situated within Arsenale, the naval base, which occupies over one-fifth the area of Venice. This gentrified maritime neighbourhood feels busy but casual. Castello’s side streets are laid back, with small boats lining canals criss-crossed by laundry. Semiannual exhibitions add a strong artsy current to the Arsenale area. Via Garibaldi in Castello, with its shops and bars, has one of Venice's rare straight and wide boulevards. When a large ship turns around the Lido to enter the Giudecca Canal, the startling sight creates an illusion that it will run aground right on Via Garibaldi! Families treasure Giardini near the island's tip, green with rare trees and grass, and Riva degli Schiavoni is a popular spot for Venetians to take a stroll to watch the sunset.
