The owner did his best to find us a seat although the restaurant was full. He and his wife were very attentionate hosts. Excellent pumpkin pastas. Excellent and quick service. When bringing us the bill, we notified her that they forgot to count the bottle of sparkling water. She simply told us it was not a big deal and offered... More

Don't expect silver service....this is home-style food with no frills...just good and tasty fare. Our limited Italian helped us order our meals, which were simple, but delicious and exactly the sort of thing we were looking for. This place is more authentic than many others in Venice...and has a high turnover of people going there to dine, which meant that... More

Our AirBNB host recommended this little Trattoria down the street near the Ospedale. The owners speak little English, it is Italy afterall! That's part of the charm, we split pasta with clams and the grilled sea bass. Wonderful! There is no need to rush, take your time and enjoy your food and wine.

The food was fresh and tasted like something my Italian grandmother would make. The ambiance of the restaurant was just what one would expect from a trattoria, COZY. The walls were proudly covered in architectural photographs taken by a family member. We stumbled across this place in our efforts to escape the touristy areas. It was one of the best... More

Off the tourist beaten track this small trattoria is a gem. We were greeted by the matriarch and quickly seated. This is not a fancy place. Paper place mats and paper napkins adorn the table. The service is friendly and unhurried. The menu is simple Venetian seafood. My wife started with a baked scallops antipasto. Three large tender scallops prepared... More

We searched out this trattoria in Castello because I had read that they offer some of the best-value seafood in Venice. The review was definitely right! We had a wonderful dinner of very fresh, baked Branzino con Carcioffi and Orata with Patate e Timon. Both were absolutely delicious! Trattoria Bandierette is close to the San Giovanni and San Paolo church,... More

A family run trattoria with good food and great prices. We had been referred to another restaurant down the street but were unable to get a table, so continued looking in the neighborhood and found our way here. We enjoyed a fun selection of Cicchetti, wonderfully fresh seafood, and a nice bottle of wine. Every plate that passed our table... More

Best food I had the entire trip! This place is a great ristorante with the freshest fish. The prices are fantastic and the quality of the food is exceptional. The walk was a hour from Dorsoduro and it was worth every step. The owner Anna and her husband know how to run a ristorante. I encourage anyone who loves fish... More

What every local trattoria should be. No pretensions, reasonable prices, family run with love. The best meal we had in Venice. Fresh fish. We had seafood salad, spaghetti with clam sauce and local Branzini. Two glasses of Prosecco, cappuccino and two excellent chocolate cakes. Not easy to get to but well worth the trip. See you next time we come... More

Simply put we ordered 2 meals and a bottle of Merlot. The wine came though it was of rather poor quality but it was 10€. We were seated in the far rear of the restaurant and after an hour no food had come yet the staff cleared tables around us. We got the impression the staff didn't really care. We... More

Staying in Castello

Neighbourhood Profile
Castello is the largest of the six sestieri (districts), and the only one not facing onto the Grand Canal. More than half of Castello is situated within Arsenale, the naval base, which occupies over one-fifth the area of Venice. This gentrified maritime neighbourhood feels busy but casual. Castello’s side streets are laid back, with small boats lining canals criss-crossed by laundry. Semiannual exhibitions add a strong artsy current to the Arsenale area. Via Garibaldi in Castello, with its shops and bars, has one of Venice's rare straight and wide boulevards. When a large ship turns around the Lido to enter the Giudecca Canal, the startling sight creates an illusion that it will run aground right on Via Garibaldi! Families treasure Giardini near the island's tip, green with rare trees and grass, and Riva degli Schiavoni is a popular spot for Venetians to take a stroll to watch the sunset.
