Tried to dine here this time last year but couldn't get a table. This time we planned and booked ahead....a wise move indeed. This is a small restaurant along the promenade to Castello in a quiet side street. Friendly greeting as we entered and were given a choice of tables as we had an early booking. The waiter was friendly... More

Dining at Al Covo is a wonderful experience. The restaurant appeals on all levels: charming service, lovely settings, and tasty food and wine. We had tender gnocchi, soft shelled crab, clam pasta. It is a family-run business--the father a native of Venice, the mother an ex-pat from Texas, and a charming son. All the servers speak excellent English, so one... More

Excellent food, attentive service and close to St Marks Square. Would definitely recommend a visit if in Venice. Had a seafood tasting menu with matched wines, and as someone who would usually avoid seafood on a menu, it was fantastic.

We were in general underwhelmed by the restaurants in Venice but this was very good. It's a proper, professionally run restaurant with very good food and charming staff. The overall quality of the food was excellent and the service and ambiance excellent. We would return.

My daughter picked the restaurants on our trip to Venice. Her selection of Al Covo was spot on. We started with soups. We had two different seafood samplers, which were spectacular. My daughter, who is vegan, had the vegetarian plate. We shared two different desserts. It was an excellent meal with very good service in a cozy location. Diane, one... More

Cosy restaurant east of Piazza San Marco. Worth the 25 min walk from the hotel. Warm welcome by the owners. The culatello with cheese and pears was one of the best I ever had. The culatello comes from a small producer in Zibello. Main dish was lamb which was also delicious and very tender. Good sommelier to help you with... More

My husband and I enjoyed a very fine meal of local cuisine, exactly what we were looking for. This is a very nice place to enjoy a meal in Venice.

Food 10/10, wine 10/10, service 11/10 If you want the full experience opt for the very fairly priced taster menu, explained by a passionate and knowledgeable waiter that really added to whole experience. We opted for the accompanying wines and glad we did. The owners were lovely and really made us feel like their guests. A perfect choice!

Tasting menu plus a la carte available, fresh ingredients, wonderful fish. Really charming couple -- Italian chef and American wife.

We had a really great meal and felt welcomed by owner Diane from Texas. Food was excellent, location a bit hard to find but worth the effort!!

Staying in Castello

Neighbourhood Profile
Castello
Castello is the largest of the six sestieri (districts), and the only one not facing onto the Grand Canal. More than half of Castello is situated within Arsenale, the naval base, which occupies over one-fifth the area of Venice. This gentrified maritime neighbourhood feels busy but casual. Castello’s side streets are laid back, with small boats lining canals criss-crossed by laundry. Semiannual exhibitions add a strong artsy current to the Arsenale area. Via Garibaldi in Castello, with its shops and bars, has one of Venice's rare straight and wide boulevards. When a large ship turns around the Lido to enter the Giudecca Canal, the startling sight creates an illusion that it will run aground right on Via Garibaldi! Families treasure Giardini near the island's tip, green with rare trees and grass, and Riva degli Schiavoni is a popular spot for Venetians to take a stroll to watch the sunset.
