My mom and I wanted to get some fondue (perfect for a chilly night) and this place was near our hotel and was easy to make reservations online (though you can walk in fairly easily I think). We shared the traditional fondue (comes with bread cubes) and had the small sirloin steak and gambas (large shrimp) as our entrees. It... More

A very warm and friendly welcome on arrival. The staff were very polite and efficient. The food was fantastic, very well presented and arrived shortly after ordering. We were very impressed with Het Karbeel on our visit to Amsterdam and ate there for the four days we were there, and will definitely recommend this restaurant to all our friends and... More

Found this little restaurant by chance when looking for something to eat for breakfast. We weren't disappointed and returned 3 days in a row, sampling the Royal English breakfasts, omelette and Holland breakfast, all which were delicious. Staff really friendly and welcoming and a smooth of the resident cat and added extra. Will definitely return when we are next in... More

We stumbled upon this little gem as we were on the search for pancakes! What we found was so much more. Gorgeous cheese fondue, lovely wine and the pancakes were out of this world. Especially the apple and cinnamon one! Highly recommend it. Even though the food was excellent - the service is the key selling point of this restaurant.... More

Food was fine. Was the only place we visited in Amsterdam that flat out refused to give the table a carafe of water.

Great Big Pancakes with maple syrup, honey, or powdered sugar served in a basket - you choose your poison. Hot Coffee or cold milk to drink. Quick friendly service. Fair Prices. They speak and understand Dutch and English.

We almost went down the road to another restaurant, really glad we decide to give Het Karbeel a try. The staff were lovely and helpful. Service was at a nice pace without rushing us at any point. The food was fantastic. We had BBQ ribs and fondue both were very tasty. The price was very reasonable. We would visit again.

Awesome crew and amazing atmosphere!! Fondue is a perfect size for one huge dinner or share it with a friend. Spend there two dinners in the same week!! Regularly crowded but just give them a call some minutes before your arrival and all will be set for you!! They have very nice beers too!!

Staying in Red Light District (De Wallen)

Neighbourhood Profile
Red Light District (De Wallen)
To visit Amsterdam and not explore De Wallen (the Dutch name for this area) or to go only to gawk at its saucier aspects would mean missing the opportunity to view some of the city’s most picturesque canals, historic landmarks, and impeccably presented examples of traditional local architecture – not to mention Amsterdam’s own Chinatown, Europe’s largest Buddhist temple and more local treasures. Sure, there are some less salubrious activities drawing the curious to this age-old part of time. Nevertheless, the Red Light District is still a very safe and incredibly fascinating area where at the turn of a corner you can be transported from the dingy glow of modern day neon red to a glorious 16th century Delft blue dreamscape.
